Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Spectacular effects and heart-felt, touching story
Do not listen to people's reviews that think the story is thin or light. The story is exactly what people want and expect. It is story that touches your emotions about family, love, and community. This is not a deep thinker mystery or a suspense movie, but if you've decided to see an Avatar sequel, you should already know what to expect. It is a thoroughly enjoyable action movie with happy and sad moments. It is a movie that forces the audience think more broadly about our environment, and the kind of world we want to leave for future generations... not unlike the original Avatar. The slang language and comments used by the youngster characters in the movie are funny and would be viewed as such by the younger generation in the audience. This is a "movie" and succeeds at entertaining the audience better than most.
Munich: The Edge of War (2021)
Captivating
I have always enjoyed WW II history. This movie and story fills in a political viewpoint leading up to the military invasions by Germany. It is a brilliant story filled with politics, tension and back channel espionage. The costumes and sets (and classic automobiles) are quite well done.
No Time to Die (2021)
My cryptic review
There is a new 007, she is a female
There is a new "Bond" and she is a female
The ending is a disappointment in a strange way
I might never go to another James Bond movie again.
Goliath: Hadleyville (2021)
Hmmm... season 4 is a bit of a let down
Don't know why.... but the magic is gone. Story (writing), camera effects, etc did not come up to th standards off past seasons.
CODA (2021)
A must see good feeling movie, plus more
I love movies that move me emotionally. This is one of special movies that drills down to the core of your emotion. It involves a coming of age struggle between family and destiny as the synopsies allude to. But it is also a great story that breaks down barriers and perceptions some of us might have about people that are different or disabled.
The Call of the Wild (2020)
Great man's best friend story
If you own a dog, and/or you are into dog/animal type movies, this is a pretty good piece of entertainment. Kind of typical lost-hero dog, bad-guy story. You might need a tissue or two.
Greyhound (2020)
Great action and tension in the North Atlantic
Of course I like war movies. Greyhound is an excellent update of some of the north Atlantic WWII "convoy" movies of the 1940's and 1950's. Story and special effects were very entertaining.
Columbo: No Time to Die (1992)
Not what you expect or want from "Columbo"
I don't know what the writer(s) are trying to do to the Columbo series... destroy the successful formula? Terrible predictable plot, that ignores and avoids the traditional Columbo mind game engagement with the known criminal. Awful.
Luther (2010)
Bad mix of thin police plot and weird fantasy
I tried to like this, but I really can't latch onto any aspect of this series. The mystery police crime type capers are thin, underdeveloped and easily solved by
Luther. On the flip side, the fantasy story developed around Luther's personal life, marriage, etc is totally unbelievable and seem disjointed from the crime plots. The Luther series doesn't know whether it is crime or fantasy, and succeeds at neither.
The Walking Dead: Here's Negan (2021)
TWD writers desperately try to revive a dead series
Sorry TWD fans. This series has been on life support, due to terrible plot and writing, for several episodes. This episode is a last ditch effort by writers to keep the series going by creating a new thread of a story (focused on Negan) that is weak and disjointed from the original premise.
Silent Witness: A Kind of Justice: Part 1 (1999)
Earth to Earth
How can 6 men carry over 2 cubic yards of damp earth and dirt in a wooden box?
Joker (2019)
I expected more ...
Despite the best actor win, which I my view is not necessarily deserved, thos movie was a let dow for me. No real intrigue in the story behind the Joker, and predictable. Sorry. I just didn't find it ejoyable
Official Secrets (2019)
Disturbing inside view of the controversy surrounding the Iraq war
Well done. Great acting. Captivating suspense. This film exposes the weak reasoning for the U.S., and coalition forces going into Iraq on the basis of WMD. The whistleblower justification, her investigation, and the impact on her spouse, friends, media and public, are fascinating from a historic perspective
Uncut Gems (2019)
Sandler's more serious dramatic side
While there are several spots in "Uncut Gems" that almost make you giggle in disbelief, this an edgy and disturbing movie. I recall seeing Adam Sandler in "Punch Drunk Love" and had a similar positive reaction to his serious side of acting. Perhaps it takes a somewhat off-the-wall comic, to successfully pull off strange dramatic roles.
Mommy's Little Princess (2019)
Poorly written screenplay; choppy editing and flow
The storyline of this nature could have been good, but it ended up choppy and predictable. I found the flipping or flow from one scene to another to be odd and confusing, leaving me unsatisfied with the story. The dialogue was campy and predictable. This movie just did not have the flow that would have made it a bit more entertaining, in which case I might have given it a 5... but still not very good. The young actress at the centre of the movie deserves a nod for her efforts as an actress .
