Town Without Pity (1961)
Great song, great movie!
Probably best known today for it's unforgettable title song by Gene Pitney, which was a huge international hit and sold 3.5 million records that year, this was a courageous film to make in 1961. With dramas about rape something you can see almost every night on TV you may forget that this was almost taboo in those days. A powerful well acted drama from start to finish, my only complaint would be the totally unnecessary narration. Perhaps this isn't on the German version but the film I saw it is a horrible distraction. A female voice tells you everything your seeing as it happens, gives unnecessary explanations, and tells you what the Germans are saying in their native language. Simple subtitles would have been much better. But putting that aside you have a powerful film with an excellent cast. Christina Kaufman should have become a major star. As is, this is her best role. Don't miss it!
Wild in the Streets (1968)
I loved this movie!
This film could only have been made in 1968. No other time era produced such insanity. It's great fun and the ultimate American International Teen movie. I remember seeing this film four times when it came out in 1968. I also bought the book by Robert Thom (which was better and had a much better ending), the soundtrack album, the 45 record of "Shape Of Things To Come" with "Free Love" on the flip side and I even have a one sheet movie poster from the film. I guess I fell for this movie! The people here who dislike the film take it too seriously. It is a wild fantasy about teenagers taking over the United States and putting all adults in concentration camps! How can you take such a plot seriously? Dr Strangelove was more plausible but this film cuts with some great satire of it's own. A one of a kind film you won't forget!
The Impossible Years (1968)
I loved this movie!
I saw this one when it first came out in 1968. Loved it then although now it's as dated as a beach blanket bingo movie. David Niven actually throws a fit because his 17 year old daughter might have lost her virginity. Like, "Heavens to Betsy!" Pretty dated even then. Worth watching for the funny performances and the warm nostalgia for the 60's. Christina Ferrare is stunning and I'll never understand why she didn't become a bigger star. Film suffers from a cheap low budget back lot appearance. They even used rear projection for the beach scenes! Too cheap to go to the ocean? But I still recommend it for the warm nostalgic feeling for the times.
Four Friends (1981)
AN ALL-TIME FAVORITE MOVIE
I was so moved by this film in 1981, I went back to the theater four times to see it again! Something I have never done for another film. No movie evokes the feelings of growing up in the 60's like Four Friends. That it so closely approximated my own experiences in the 60's is probably something that many will share. Jodi Thelen is radiantly beautiful and unforgetable! Why she didn't become a major star after this I will never know. The acting by the entire cast is flawless as is Steve Tisch's script. I always wanted to know how much of the story was autobiographical. But alas, Steve is no longer here to answer that question. I have all but worn out my VHS copy of this great movie! Highly recommended!
