As Good as It Gets (1997)
Absolutely heart-warming
Wow Nicholson and Hunt certainly deserve their Oscars for this movie. I thought I'd watch this as the reviews had been good and I missed it at the cinema. I'm glad I did ,the story is one of those rare scripts that just rips out the heart strings let alone pluck at them.Nicholson's characters transformation from spit it like it is to sympathetic lover is compelling, and Hunt's portrayal of a Mother at her whits end with A+E doctors was played with the tenacity of any parent who has faced brick walls over their children's health problems. I admit I wept when she was trying to express to Nicholson how she couldn't work out how best to say thank you, and what she called a note of thanks, I'd have called an essay.Greg Kinnear plays the rejected by his parents gay man with true feeling and the resulting chemistry between all the main characters was a joy to watch. I would have no hesitation in recommending this film to anyone who has a wet afternoon to kill.
Showgirls (1995)
A good story, badly acted.
I thought the crux of the story was very good and insightful into the world of exotic dancing, although sad to say the acting left much to be desired.Elizabeth Berkley as Nomi was wooden and shallow the only exception being her ability to move well in the dance sequences. I felt Gina Gershon could have been a little bit nastier and bitchier towards her contemparies and yes she did deserve her come-uppance. Paul verhoeven directed well and kept the story tight and the circle was completed with the end sequence.Basically I would describe this film as a soft-porn movie with cash to spend on sets and names.
Intimate Relations (1996)
very well acted and executed
I thought this film was very well acted especially by the lead actors. Julie Walters gives a brilliant performance, as always, and the story was kept tight and interesting throughout. The ending was very brutal but honestly approached, although of course no-one can be sure exactly what really happened as the two main witnesses couldn't testify.
