Tooth Fairy 2 (2012)
My kids loved this - and Larry was a delight
Like many people I came to this with low expectations, but I'm sitting here as my kids are watching it for the third day in a row. Sure it's pretty formulaic and predictable, but who cares - it works. Larry is a great physical comedian and putting him in scenes with kids makes for great entertainment. Larry's appeal cuts across ages and situations - he works well in scenes with adults as well. I'm not sure how they made the decision to make a second film for this franchise especially considering how different this one is, but I'm hoping to see Larry the Cable Guy in similar films in the future. I should also add the supporting cast were also pretty spot-on, even though they were playing pretty two-dimensional characters.
Lumumba (2000)
Essential viewing
I feel very fortunate to have the chance to not only watch this film, but also learn more about this fascinating person and time. Lumumba is an outstanding portrayal, giving a full sense of the story without falling into the usual Hollywood trappings - yes, he is shown with his wife and children, but the essence of the story is his politics and those of the still-emerging independent Congo. The film is brilliantly made, moving along at a pace that is consistently engaging. I look forward to seeing other Raoul Peck films, as well as more from Eric Ebouaney!
Do the Right Thing (1989)
Outstanding as a film and a teaching tool
I show this film to my English classes every year as part of our unit on civil rights. The combination of issues and open ending make it a source of endless conversation, due to the powerful visual images and thought -provoking questions it is not afraid to ask.
Victor/Victoria (1982)
big build up, no pay off
From the wooden acting of Andrews and Garner to the oddly uneven plot, this film had very few redeeming moments. Robert Preston's final song, and a few funny lines from Alex Karras are about the only enjoyable moments to this otherwise well-intentioned but poorly executed romp.
