Disaster! (2005)

This is really out of this world...
16 August 2006
I just had the luck to see this film at the Hamburg Fantasy Film Fest and loved it, why? It is so far out and funny, in all shades, good humour, bad humour and very bad humour. A little like the Team America makers decided to save the budget by using wax puppets and use the saved cash for really bad substances (I know of course that this is not the case, but look at it and you should see what I mean ;-)) The plot follows the Armageddon script and has some very recognizable scenes almost exactly taken from, it well, momentarily to change drastically and create humour this way and it works! If you like your puppet comedies tough, go and see this one. If you mind bad language and/or explicit themes and scenes, maybe reconsider...

I expect this to rise in the list of worst movies...

Warning: Spoilers
I was prepared by many aspects before I saw this film unwillingly at a sneak preview. I heard bad things about it and I was aware by Mr Boll's other dud House of the Dead. Bad as bad can be and that to me causes some fun, but does not justify any better ratting...

Acting is bad throughout the whole film, how can it be that formerly acceptable actors (or better) like Slater and Dorff deliver so badly? Is it just the lack of script, directing talent and what-do-I-know? I hope so, future films of these actors shall show this.

Editing was horrible, there were so many scenes cut to the next scene without any sense of rhythm or continuity. Some people should really worry about their jobs here! CGI must have been just invented for this film, or how do you explain that one effect was used over and over and it looked like it could use at least a decade of development in technical aspects, but no, this film is from the first decade in 2000 CGI is with us for a while and getting better every minute - why not here? The story is loosely based on the plot of the computer games of the same name, but I cannot recall anything from it, I know I played the original years back - the film brought no recollections. And did I fall asleep or was there no scene when anyone was alone in the dark? Mr Boll, please spare us from this and move on to do something else...

Putting erotic into it does not make it more of a thriller
15 July 2004
This is definitely one of the worst movies I had to see (I would not have, but this was in context of a sneak preview where you get to see a surprise film).

It has absolutely no interesting plot, after 30 minutes you already are so indifferent to who the killer really is, you just dread for the end as soon as possible.

The camera work is awful, shaky and out of focus - some may call it art if that is so, then please remove this film from cinemas and get it into museums, I don't go there often.

The soundtrack was tedious, either dragging classical-like stuff, or old songs in radio quality, the best being an Eurythmics song.

Worst of all were the ridiculous sex scenes, the exposed penis at the beginning or the nude scenes with Meg Ryan - all awful and I think this was only used to attempt saving the picture, by dragging certain people to the back rows of the cinemas.

No good of any kind in this film - absolutely a must avoid!

Absolute low point in movie history...
19 November 2002
How much more so-called musicians do we have to endure in the movie theaters? It's getting worse with every film, I thought Busta Rhymes ridiculous role in Halloween:Resurrection was the low point, but alas no, I got the awful On The Line at the English language sneak preview last night and it was just a nuisance (I have to carefully avoid the real and rightful words I use here...). The story was very familiar and it was told bad as can be! I last saw this story done well in Serendipity (spelling?), but this one had actors in it, while On The Line was nothing but a blown up video clip that should rot on MTV not at movie theaters - Nuff Said!

I give this 1 of 10 stars, but only since 0 is not possible...

Strike Three!
2 November 2000
I chose the summary, because I think O Brother is the third masterpiece in a row by the Coen brothers, after Fargo and Big Lebowski.

Though each film is different, they all include great acting, beautiful pictures and very interesting characters.

The humour in places is hard to take, but I just could not stop laughing. Especially the KKK scene springs to mind, I thought that I should not laugh at that, but then memories of the Olympic Games opening came to mind and I nearly rolled on the floor...

The acting throughout is amazing and it was great to see Clooney in a different role, not tilting his head ;-) Torturro was amazing too, it was hard to recognize him at first, then I knew and then it was gone again as he was living the role. Maybe the third (unknown to me so far therefor I lack the name) was maybe the best, since I don't know him, I hope he was acting ;-)

Bottom line is that O Brother is an amazing film and the music fits in wonderfully. I saw in the end title that the yodeling was done by someone else, but was the singing by the actors? Yup, ah thank there ain't no way not gettin' that soun'track disc fellers...

Peace, song and fun, Roughale
