Big Impression (1999– )
Incredible
3 June 2001
Since the first time I saw this show I've been hooked. Alistair McGowan is amazingly talented, as is his sidekick Ronnie Ancona. This programme is wickedly funny. Not only are the impersonations terrific, but the sketches are hilarious too. I hope it keeps going for as long as possible.

Refreshingly funny romantic comedy.

I have never read the book that this film is adapted from but if it's as good as the film I'd rush out and buy it. I was wary of seeing this film to begin with because of all the hype prior to its release. I thought that (as has happened with many other films in the past) it would not live up to expectations. The first thing that put me off watching was the choice of Texan Renee Zellweger to portray the very British Bridget. I thought the film would be ruined by another American actor failing miserably at attempting the British accent, however I was wrong. She sounded totally authentic. Also her acting was fantastic as a desperate, lonely thirty-something single woman. Hugh Grant and Colin Firth were also brilliant. It's great to see Hugh Grant in a change of character. It shows what a talented actor he is, easily making the transition from his usual role of nice guy to the smug womaniser he plays in this. What I loved though was how realistic it was. I'm sure many women cringed as they saw something embarrassing happen to Bridget and remember when they were in a similar situation. Usually while watching so called 'chick flicks' you hear a great response from the women in the audience but the men look half asleep. This was not the case as I watched this film. The men found it just as hilarious.

Don't miss it!

Teachers (2001–2004)
Fantastic new comedy-drama.

When I sat down to watch this show I did it with low expectations as (although I hate to admit it) British series of recent years have not been up to scratch. Instead I have enjoyed watching American series such as 'The West Wing', 'Ally McBeal' and 'ER'. However I was pleasantly surprised by 'Teachers'. As well as being incredibly funny, this show is realistic.

It shows the everyday life of a twenty -something secondary school teacher, Simon, who everyone would love as their teacher as he doesn't seem to want to grow up. We see how he copes with teaching his rowdy class and how he gets on with his workmates. There's Jenny, the teacher who has a reputation for being a bit of a dragon and shows obvious contempt for Simon, which he returns equally (although he has a secret crush on her). There's his two slobby mates who are also teachers and there's his friend Susan who is the head of year and who he consults for advice on his personal life. He also has an on-off relationship with policewoman Maggie (who smokes pot when she's off duty). In my opinion it's unmissable.

Truly amazing.

When I sat down to see this film I was apprehensive because I had heard that it was very violent and that's not usually my sort of thing. I decided to watch it though as it had been given such good reviews and I already knew what a fantastic actor Edward Norton was. This film is one that I think makes and impact whether you love it or hate it. I thought it was terrific and Norton's oscar nomination for his role as modern day Nazi Derek Vinyard was truly deserved. This film tells the story of how Derek came to reform while spending time in prison for the murders of two black men who were trying to steal his car. Derek, just released, realises that his younger brother Danny is headed down the same path and tries to stop him before he gets into trouble. Edward Furlong also gives a good performance as impressionable Danny. Well worth watching.

Pleasantville (1998)
9/10
Fantastically original film

I liked this film because it was different. It's not just a plot that I have watched a million times before. OK so it has the common baseline of one person trying to fight for what he believes in, against something or someone bigger or more powerful than he is, however with Pleasantville there's a difference. What makes this film individual is how colour is used. As people blossom into what they want to be and show their inner passions they begin to change from black and white into colour. Also the cast list is impressive and each actor lives up to the great standard expected of them. This is especially true for Tobey Maguire, Reese Witherspoon and Joan Allen. I'd give this film 9/10.

Primal Fear (1996)

Brilliant acting from Norton and Gere.

Primal fear is a brilliant courtroom thriller. Most films of this genre are either realistic but boring, or full of twists but completely unbelievable. Primal fear has both the realism and suprising twists. The acting is terrific and Edward Norton is perfectly cast in the role of altar boy Aaron. This film doesn't disappoint.
