One Point O (2004)
A Gorgeous Film
I saw this film at Sundance, and think it is by far the best looking film I have seen there. The greatest thing about it is that you can really see the amazing artistic/creative ability of the filmmakers. Each shot is like a beautiful photograph, carefully chosen but not pretentious. The look of the film enables the viewer to have an "experience" of a future that is bleak. (And I loved the choice of using retro looking phones/appliances, etc.--Rather than a bright future, I was certain this one was grim.) Generally speaking, I am not a fan of sci-fi, but I did not feel like I needed to be for this film--I would not classify this film as sci-fi...but that's just my opinion.
Although not everyone seems to agree that the story was worth telling...I disagree. I completely bought into it, and enjoyed it each step of the way.
My only question is, why is this a straight to video release? It should be viewed in the theatre where one can really appreciate it's beauty.
Touch of Pink (2004)
A Wonderful Surprise!
I saw this film at Sundance and was completely surprised at how much I loved it. I am not always into gay-themed films (I'm a straight woman), but this film is really for everyone (open-minded, that is). The story is not new in that it's a romantic comedy, but the journey of the characters (the two leads, and the mother) is a good one. It was funny, and it made me cry...the perfect combination for a film. The actors were great. Especially Kyle MacLachlan, who was SO funny and SO good. I have loved him since "Twin Peaks," but this was just above and beyond anything he has done recently. And Kristen Holden-Reid is my new favorite actor. He has a great presence on screen, and pulled off a flawless English accent. I completely recommend this film.
Panic (2000)
I've seen so many great movies recently, and this is NOT one of them
I've seen so many great movies recently, and this is NOT one of them. I could not have been more disappointed in a film starring Macy...he's usually wiser in his choices. The performances were very one-dimensional (with only a few exceptions). This was not completely the fault of the cast--the writing was so uninteresting despite the intriguing topic. I knew the ending 20 minutes into it, but was hoping for a surprise. It didn't happen.
