I Love You, Man (2009)
Painful bromance
Dweeby real estate agent Paul Rudd unsurprisingly has no friends. This is a problem because he's getting married and will need a best man. After a series of misfires he meets Jason Segel who is a tiny step up from Rudd in likability. They hit it off, problem solved. However, due to movie logic they have a falling out and things look bleak before they reunite and everyone lives happily ever after. The end.
The movie doesn't work because in order to make the Rudd's having no friends believable, they give him an cringingly awkward personality. Therefore he isn't OUR friend either, so we don't want to watch his life play out.
Maybe it would have worked better to make him an ob/gyn or dress designer or women's prison guard or kindergarten teacher; something where his lack of male friends would be explained by not having any around. He himself could be perfectly nice, but thrown into funny situations.
The Hollywood Knights (1980)
Awful American Graffiti wanna be
The only thing worthwhile is the soundtrack. The movie is patterned after American Graffiti, but instead of being sweet, funny and original, it is simply mean spirited and gross. I discarded my copy.
Little Pink House (2017)
Spot On
I was fortunate enough to meet Susette Kelo before seeing the movie. It is amazing how closely Catherine Keener gets her right; her look, voice, shyness and inner strength. The movie also does an excellent job of balancing the political story with the personal one. It's a very fine line because with too much of one you'd have a documentary and too much of the other you wouldn't know what was going on. Well worth the price of admission.
