Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
That was awesome
I was absolutely elated after seeing this movie. It was far better than anything I expected. It matches up well with the first two films in the trilogy. I loved every moment of every scene and found no problems. Natalie Portman was the most beautiful thing in it. Hayden and Ewan both gave competent performances. The special effects and battle scenes were truly awesome. It was easily the best film I have seen this year.
I first saw Episode IV when I was six years old and Episode V when I was 9. This films takes me back to that greatness. Anyone who fails to see the brillance of this movie is blind.
Here is how I rank the films in the series:
1. The Empire Strikes Back **** 2. Star Wars **** 3. Attack of the Clones **** 4. Return of the Jedi ***1/2 5. The Phantom Menace ***
Dungeons & Dragons (2000)
Better than expected
Back in the late 80s and early 90's I played D&D as a hobby. At the time I thought that if they ever made a movie about the game it would be really cheesy and badly acted. I guessed right. The movie looked cheap and the acting was bad from just about everyone. However, I enjoyed the film more than I thought I would. I had a great time watching it and still recommend it to others. It exeeded my expectations. It was not as bad as I imagined it to be. I liked the dwarf and Zoe Mclellan and hope to see more of her in the future.
Unbreakable (2000)
Better than the Sixth Sense
I was amazed at this film. I didn't like the Sixth Sense, but this film I feel is much better. Many people have been taken aback by the ending of the film, but I thought it was great. The performances by Willis and Jackson were amazing. I will be haunted by this film for days and will most likely see it again.
Starship Troopers (1997)
Good parody of fascism
I tend to like Peter Veerhoven's movies (I even liked Showgirls) and I enjoyed this one. People who don't like or understand this film don't realize that it is a parody of fascism and that the humans are the actual villains. This is the first time I saw Denise Richards and I thought she was hot, but I eventually realized that she is a bimbo with no talent. The highlight of the film is seeing Doogie Howser in a Nazi SS uniform at the end,
Excalibur (1981)
Truly magnificent
This is one of my all-time favorite movies. I have seen it at least 20 times. I get chills when I see the scenes at the beginning and the end where the sword rises and descends from the water. The acting performances are not brilliant, but they are adequate. It is nice to see Patrick Stewart and Liam Neeson in a film together before they got famous.
The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978)
It's really not that horrible.
I saw this when I was seven years old and I loved it. I bought a pirated video copy years later and watched it again. While it wasn't as good as my youthful memories suggested, it wasn't horrible. I liked the song that Carrie Fisher sang and wished I had the lyrics for it. The weak part of the show is the comedian guest stars like Bea Arthur. I gave the videotape to my brother-in-law as a gift. I dont't think he hated it either.
Battlefield Earth (2000)
Worst film of 2000
Congratulations to all who voted for Battlefield Earth. It is now down to a 2.4 rating and is descending the list of the 100 worst films ever. Let's keep giving the film our 1's and have it descend to even lower on the list. Curse John Travolta and everyone else involved in this travesty.
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
Least of the series, but I still liked it.
I was one of those people who stayed up until midnight on the day the movie opened, and while I still liked the Phantom Menace I can't say it measured up to the first two films. There are ten things I like about the movie, and ten things I don't. What I liked: 1. Liam Neeson. 2. Natalie Portman. She and Neeson gave the best acting performances. I am now in love with her. 3. The special effects in general were excellent. 4. The finale was one of the best I have ever seen in a movie. 5. Costume designs. 6. Darth Maul. 7. The Pod Race. 8. Pernilla August. 9. Yoda. 10. Did I mention I love Natalie Portman?
Now the ten things I didn't like: 1. Jake Lloyd. 2. Ewan Mcgreggor didn't have enough to do. 3. Jar Jar Binks. 4. The Neimoudians. 5. The movie was too long. 6. The absence of an extended space battle scene. 7. C-3PO was left behind and had little impact. 8. Not enough political background. 9. The absence of a scene where Jar Jar dies. 10. The overall plot could have been fleshed out.
I am still an eager Star Wars fan, and likely will be one the rest of my life. I hope Hayden Christiansen is a much better Anakin than Jake Lloyd and that Episode II will recapture the magic of the first two films.
The Piano (1993)
Lousy art movie
This is the kind of movie that critics praise but regular moviegoers can't stand to watch. I found it boring as all heck. The acting performances were good, but there was no story to go along with it. If you want a cure for insomnia, then perhaps this movie is for you.
Miss Julie (1999)
What a waste of film!
This was a play that was turned into a really lousy movie. There was no plot, the camera work was horrible, and it was horribly boring. None of the actors had the least bit of appeal. I wasted my money by renting this, so don't waste yours too.
The Patriot (2000)
The best movie I have seen this year.
This film was great. All the acting performances were great. I hope Heath Ledger becomes a big star, and I hope we get to see more of Lisa Brenner. I hope this film is a big hit and that Hollywood will mine history more often in the future.
