Superlatives!
16 September 2002
I find I have to make room in my list of the top ten films of all time for "City By The Sea," alongside masterpieces like "The Blue Angel" and "Casablanca." If that doesn't tell you how good this movie is, I don't know what will. I tend to view films with my intellect --and let me say that I bestow the honorific of "intelligent" on all aspects of this film, from acting to directing to screenplay, but I can't recall any movie I have seen in the past decade that played on so many in the range of emotions, or so powerfully as this one. When the detective's partner is shot, I felt grief. When the grandson is taken away by Child Services, I felt horror. And I laughed delightedly at the information overload displayed by girlfriend Michelle (Frances McDorman) when Detective La Marca finally grants her wish and tells her everything --EVERYTHING-- about his life history. I've long recognized the artistry of Robert De Niro's acting, but this was, in my judgment, his finest hour. And imagine this: it's based on a true story.

AWFUL!!!
31 July 2001
"Why can't we all get along?" the Rodney King ape asks. Maybe it's because Hollywood insists on doing awful re-makes of classic movies! There is NOTHING worth seeing in this film (except, maybe, Charlton Heston's cameo). The remake is cliché-ridden, wholly predictable, and the ending makes no sense whatsoever . Why would anyone even THINK of tampering with a work of art like the original version of the Planet of the Apes? Avoid this travesty of a movie and rent the video of the 1968 classic.
