Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
The power of cash compels them
And I thought the saga had been disgraced with the second installment. Fool of me!
Beware those who expect a return to the fresh style and light adventure comedy that worked so well in the 'Curse of the Black Pearl'.
More ludicrous plot twists, failed deception games and a ridiculous sense of humor lie ahead...
Yeh be warned!
By the way, parents concerned about violence should avoid taking their kids to this movie, for it depicts certain scenes with a complete unnecessary fidelity. I think many will find it disturbing.
Creep (2004)
It could have been worst...
*** WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD *** Well, let me think again... no, it couldn't. It's one of the worst horror movies I've ever seen, closely followed by the remake of The Texas chainsaw massacre (2004).
First of all, the plot it's SO full of clichés that you can guess what is going to happen in the end within half an hour: "beautiful" (after all we're talking about Franka Potente) woman that gets involved in a dangerous situation and makes one wrong decision after another. Somehow she finds an unexpected ally that helps her, only to die twenty minutes later because she doesn't tell him that the killer is behind him and she watches him die without doing anything at all.
But of course! The killer is almost almighty and is able to stand an incredible amount of pain. For example, Kate (Franka) hits him in the eye with a high-heeled shoe and in less than one minute he's already ready to run and kill. I'm not sure, but if someone shoves me a heel up my eye I'd probably faint. But wait, that's not the best part... this eye-heeled murderer can stand a fight with a strong man and yet kill him, chase the heroin and need two minutes to die with a hook in his neck. It's really pathetic.
Now, the plot. You know, I've been waiting the whole movie to find the slightest trace of it and I have to say that I couldn't. She gets stuck in the subway because she was going to a VIP party to try to hump on George Clooney. Don't you believe it? I swear to God it's true. And of course, when everything starts to get messy, she always makes bad choices: you're running for your life through a small passageway filled with cardboard boxes and when the light goes out you only crouch near a wall and wait for the murderer to find you. Absolutely logic, isn't it? The acting is mainly dismal. Scene after scene you don't know why the characters are acting so stupidly all the time, but that's only until you start to think that they actually deserve death. And wow, the final shot is pretty crappy: Franka looking at the camera for two seconds, with a face that pretends to show distress and looks much more like constipation.
Final advice: do NOT pay to watch this movie. Hell, do not watch it even it's shown on TV. 2 out of 10... and that's because it was not black and white.
Guerreros (2002)
A hurra for Daniel Carlparsoro
I think that fortunately spanish cinema is evolving from the obscure era of the "destape" (the first movies that were made after the death of Franco were known like this because most of them were light porn films) and from Almodovar's large shadow.
Guerreros is an entertaining film which makes the audience to question how war is really and how it is showed to us. The film begins with an intense dramatic action scene in which many kosovars are killed by serbian paramilitars. The mission of the platoon is bringing back electrical power to the village and go back home. But finally they get in trouble with the kosovar guerrilla because of the acts of a french captain and almost every french and many spanish die.
They're in the middle of Kosovo without transport, low ammunition and two wounded units.
The history is interesting and it's quite well made from the technical point of view but from the military point of view it's a complete disaster. A disaster because every lieutenant on every army knows how to manage a situation like this; that's why they're lieutenant and not soldiers, platoons never go along the path, and in anyway, all together to give a clear objective to an average shooter.
By the way, some other things are quite well done like the attitude of the sergeant, the way they manage their weapons and how finally they act. That's because they were trained partly by the spanish army and they taught them some things :)
Despite of the military mistakes, it's very entertaining and superb in FX, at least for spanish cinema. As I said in the summary, a hurra for Daniel Carlparsoro.
Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)
She'll REALLY change your life
I'll just say that when "The End" appeared on the screen and I stood up from my seat I was smiling, happy, and I was not the only one in the hall.
10/10 on plot, cast, direction, music. A must see.
:)
Pearl Harbor (2001)
It could have been 2.30 hours shorter
I don't agree at all with what has been said here until now by kitkat-1.
First of all, it falls into one of the most common errors of all Hollywood productions: I would say that the actors and actresses are not attractive but poss-looking. And, as everyone looks like living in Beverly Hills 90210 the drama of the film falls into a bad-joke level.
In the second place, simply lies. One thing is try to avoid making an extensive documentary film like "Tora! Tora! Tora!" and other, quite different, is to hide facts, or simply to tell things that didn't happen:
* USA knew perfectly what was going to happen. It was only an excuse to enter the war
* The most important ships of the Pacific Fleet were away during the japanese attack. Both of the carriers were "in missions" and also the new destroyers and cruisers
* Apart from the heavy tragedy of the sinking of the "Arizona", it was a ship built for WWI. It was quite old and was going to be retired
* The training of the japanese pilots lasted for two months, not two days
* The raid over Tokio destroyed six factories and one school. USA lost 8 pilots
As you can see, the real facts are near opposite with what is said in the film. (And I think that Jon Voight should... errrr... hmmmm.... ¿stop acting?)
House on Haunted Hill (1999)
Worst movie ever
Nonsense horror. Horrible FX. Disgusting plot. Pathetic performance. Please, DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE. I've lost three dollars renting it. It's not worth the half. In fact, I think that is not worth nothing.
