Thunderball (1965)
On rewatching Thunderball
Not as good as I remembered it though there is still a lot to admire. Most importantly of course, it has the single two most beautiful women of all in it (Martine Beswick (why was she never given a bigger role?) and Claudine Auger). Also it's got my favourite portrayal of Bond of any of the films, with Sean Connery playing him as a very rude and self-confident guy. Classic stuff! I'm not impartial to its tropical setting and John Barry's magnificent score either.
The only negative points are the underwater scenes, of which there are too many (it must be difficult to make fast and exciting action sequences in water), and the death of Paula Caplan (yes yes I know, it's called the sacrificial lamb, but couldn't we have seen a bit more of her?).
L'appartement (1996)
d'Entre les disparu
several years ago i saw this film, without subtitles, on television, and despite me not understanding a word of what the characters were saying i still got the general idea, and the mood of the film fascinated me no ends.
at long last i saw it again a few weeks ago. my heart skipped when i saw the picture in the television guide, and for 8 days until the film was really shown i told everybody i knew to go and see it. the story reminded me a bit of alfred hitchcock's vertigo. a slow, brooding film about a guy who one day believes he sees the girlfriend that disappeared years before. what follows is a wild rollercoaster ride of flashbacks, changing perspectives and really inventive twists in the plot, and at the end of the film i was left breathless. i had definitely not got what i had expected (and i had actually already seen the film!). be prepared to be confused.

i first saw this film a few years ago and i gave it a 7. maybe i was a bit young to appreciate a thriller that showed no blood and no deaths, and i awarded it with a mere 7 out of 10. this afternoon i decided to give it a second shot, and what do you know... after feeling that the first half hour was dragging a bit (plus i was distracted by a wasp that flew into my living room) i got completely drawn into this beautiful film, and the last hour or so (roughly from where alicia and devlin go horse riding to fix a "chance" encounter with alexander) turned out to be a class example on how to build tension.
throw in the perfect acting from both the main and supporting cast, and the fact that the characters are 3 dimensional (the "heroes" are not always very likeable while alexander, who is supposed to be nazi scum, is quite charming and i felt quite sad at the end where he is as good as dead) and you get another nearly perfect hitchcock flick.
