Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977)
No, it's no Meg Ryan movie, but for goodness sake...
No, don't watch this movie if you want some Meg Ryan happy ending romance. This isn't a romantic movie. It's meant to be disturbing. And the lead isn't meant to be a role model.
And it's not a technically perfect movie, either. I don't know if that was on purpose, but to me, it adds to the seedy atmosphere, and that works. I was too young to be cruising bars, etc., in the 70s, but this movie leaves me with the same uneasy impression about that whole scene that I got when I was a kid. Maybe in a way that makes it dated, but it also goes to show that it captures something very definite about the era.
To me, this movie was always more about drawing you in than being a narrative or cautionary tale. Despite yourself, you are dragged into the lead character's descent. That's one of the big reasons the ending is so shocking. It may not be a movie to rush out and make a point of seeing right away, but if you catch it and have the time to sit back and let it draw you in -- go for it.
The Electric Company (1971)
An educational Laugh-In...
I have a theory that's how they sold the show... anyway, I'm glad it happened, however it happened.
Watching the reruns on Noggin [thank you!!], I gotta say... Rita Moreno is a comic genius! But everyone was good, and not just "good for a kids' show". The performances and writing are funny even now. I've also noticed jokes and pop culture references in there that I wouldn't have understood then... and we thought they came up with that in the 90s. :)
In summary... the best children's show ever.
