Tom Hanks: The Nomad (2023)
Embarrassing error
Aside from the unfortunate production, the first two stills of Tom's first wife, Samantha (including a wedding shot) are of his second and current wife, Rita Wilson. That's a terrible screwup for a documentarian. It casts doubt on the veracity of anything subsequent in the film. The only plus might be the interviews with Tom Hanks, at least I think it's him 🤣.
I expected a much better documentary about such an outstanding actor, like Tom Hanks. He is someone as versatile as Henry Fonda, but seems to be truly admirable in his personal life. I'm curious if this film had any participation from Hanks, himself. Doubtful. He's certainly a better director than the maker of this film.
Make a Wish (1971)
The only reason for waking up on Sunday...
I loved it. Tom was wonderful and although I was almost an adult, I never missed "Make a Wish". There is so much unsuccessful garbage available on DVD and this just molds in a film vault? A travesty. I never knew for sure that Tom and Harry were brothers, but I suspected as much. The music that Tom did, his engaging manner was really refreshing, particularly when Vietnam was the predominant 'entertainment' on TV.
I also just noticed that the nice looking fellow in the remake of "The Manchurian Candidate" was Tom Chapin...go figure!
ABC: Give it to me and I'll release it. Do you need my address or shall I just drop by with a wheelbarrow and pick it up?
The L Word (2004)
Straying from cliche?
My friends and I were also eagerly anticipating this series. I've seen the pilot and three follow-on episodes with them. We all look forward to getting together for drinks or dinner and to watch "The L Word" on Sunday evening. Two of my friends (a lesbian couple of 9 years together) went on a cruise in the Pacific and the cast of "The L Word" were on board for the premiere of the pilot a few weeks ago. They told us that they although the cruise was a heavy promotion for the series, they enjoyed meeting the cast and creative folks.
Everyone generally acknowledges that the pilot serves primarily to introduce the characters and the relationships; I didn't expect much more in the first episode, to be honest.
I think the follow-on episodes have been very engaging and often I want to say "no, don't do that" (mainly because I've been there and like to think I know better now). The cast is interesting and I love seeing Jennifer Beals and Pam Grier in this challenging and risky venture.
I found myself feeling a surprising sympathy for Tim, who seems like a really nice guy (I thought he was going to flip out or get really nasty when he finds out the truth between his fiance and Marina, but he didn't.). A nasty and violent jilted male lover was what I expected, but that was not the case. I didn't want to feel for him, but I did.
I read earlier comments about the characters being too "girly". I don't think Shane is particularly 'girly'; in the trailer for the next episode, some guy is obsessed with Shane because he thinks she is a man. Give it some time, people. I think we'll see a lot of diversity in the subjects and characters. And, as some others have said, it IS LA and these women are mostly young and cute.
Good luck and surprise me again!
