Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004)

One of the Best Science Fiction Films I've Seen....

My husband and I are in our late '30s; we grew up watching the old movie series on PBS in the afternoon, on "Matinee at the Bijou", and on Saturday at midnight, the classic monster

movies and B-movies from the 50s. We were really looking

forward to "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" and we were not disappointed.

Kerry Conran did an outstanding job of giving us a 1930's

movie today. The plot worked, the acting was solid, and

it's visually interesting. He was essentially making a

Max Fleischer cartoon with live actors. It's the first movie in a long time that we've left humming the theme and with a strong urge to see the movie again in the theatre.

Great job, Kerry! And I hope we see another "Sky Captain" adventure soon!

Josie and the Pussycats (2001)

It didn't deserve to tank.

I didn't go see this movie in the theatre. I used to watch the cartoon series as a kid, but it wasn't enough of a favorite to go see the movie, especially not after it tanked at the box office. I tuned it in on cable, because there wasn't anything else on, and I was surprised how funny it was. It was the product placement that got me hooked. Everywhere you look onscreen there's an ad. Many reviewers have called this a satire of the music industry; I see it more as a satire of the "hidden" commercials in movies. I've watched it any number of times on cable now, and I'll probably pick up the DVD at some point, it was that funny. And the music is great, too.

Hollywood Homicide (2003)

I was really worried going in to see "Hollywood Homicide". The reviews quoted in the TV commercials are all from smaller media outlets and articles that I've read suggest the film makers couldn't make up their mind whether it's a comedy or an action film. After seeing the movie in the sneak preview, I know the film makers knew exactly what they they were making - a flat out comedy with some good, funny action sequences. The plot seemed well thought out -- a real web of deceit plays out during the course of the film. All the actors turned in solid performances. I'm not a fan of rap music, but the film makers blended rap (which makes sense because of the rap industry crime) with Motown and incidental music seamlessly. A bad score jumps out at me, but it all fit here. It's one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. The humor is all character-driven, never slapstick or forced. Look for lots of cameos, too. My husband had one criticism - he thought things weren't wrapped up enough at the end. I think it's well enough implied that justice will be served. So five silver movie reels from me and here's hoping "Hollywood Homicide" makes a killing at the box office. -- Auriette Lindsey
