The Ninth Gate (1999)
Interesting and boring at the same time
I went to see The Ninth Gate about a week ago, thinking it would be something like Tecmo's Deception where some guy is trying to revive Satan and ends up killing people in the process. The previews and commercials made this movie look so much more exciting than it truly was. I sat there in the theater, waiting for something "exciting" to happen. Nothing happened. Oh wait, there was a whole lot of talking and traveling, if you consider that something. However, the movie had some intriguing points. But, it was not enough to hold my interest. This is the only movie I've seen in theaters that made me say "Thank God" when it was over. Not even Primary Colors or Deep Impact or even Godzilla for that matter have ever made me say that. My opinion, just get the novel, it's probably way better.
Cameron's Closet (1988)
Is this a horror movie or an 80's music video?
Hmm... so Cameron is a psychic kid who accidentally brings a ferocious demon up from hell into his closet... Sounds like it might have potential. It did, but did it utilize that potential? No. Though this movie is tad creepy, it had some real major lows to it. Examples: the stomach growling noises coming from the closet, the almost 80's music video special effects (no wonder the thing died at the end, I think I would too if someone shot bad special effects at me through their finger tips). So, you should only preview this movie to see if you really like it first, but I don't recommend buying right away, especially without a preview.
Hobgoblins (1988)
The poor man's "Gremelins"... Only worse...
This has got to be one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Even for a purposely made stupid movie, this still sucks. Yeah, they say "purposely made" to hide the fact that: 1) No one in this movie can act, 2) The idea was very unoriginal 3) It's budget was obviously low. Strangely, some find this movie entertainingly funny. I say, if you're looking for a funny horror movie purposely made stupid, go for Dead Alive (aka Braindead).
Zaat (1971)
Sheer horror... induced by BOREDOM that is...
After seeing this movie... I had... (sob, sob)... most disturbing... no, wait... BORING nightmares. This movie nearly put me to sleep! I was surprised I was actually able to stay awake through it. I found no real merit to watching this movie whatsoever. Summing up all that sucked, well: the acting was dry, the soundtrack was corny, the plot (or lacking thereof) was totally lame, and the monster looked pretty stupid. There is no reason at all anyone should watch this. In fact, there should be a warning from the surgeon general about his movie on the box.
Night Shadows (1984)
Very Underrated and Pretty Scary
This movie, sadly, went unrecognized. I am a fan of B movies mainly because they view a part of out mind we haven't or may never see or think about, an almost creative part. Anyway, this movie was pretty good in my view. However, I think they should've stuck with the name Pestilence because that sounds so much more deadly than Night Shadows (sounds too much like a haunted house movie) or Mutant (sound too much like a mutant monster movie like Spawn of the Slithis or The Being). Anyway, if you really like zombie movies, especially any of the Night of the Living Dead trilogy (yes, it is a trilogy) or Dead Alive (aka Brain Dead), you might really like this movie.
