Manhunter (1986)
Blasphemous opinion
1 December 2002
This will no doubt elicit howls of outrage, but I have always thought that Mr. Cox's portrayal of Hannibal Lector to be far superior to that of Mr Hopkins'. Mr Cox portrays Lector as someone coldly intellectual, almost reptilian and inhuman, while Mr Hopkins gives a performance that always brings to mind that of Ernest Thesiger as Dr. Pretorius in Bride of Frankenstein". Mind you, I really enjoy Ernest Thesiger as Dr. Pretorius; I'm just saying that the charming, witty and OH! so urbane serial killer has been done to death, and had been even when "Silence Of The Lambs" came out. Rent this video if you want to see how it's supposed to be done.

What a hoot

I've long been a fan of the cartoon series with its low-rent artstyle and sly social satire. When I learned that the movie had finally come to the local theatre I convinced my 10-year old neighbor and her mother to accompany me.

It was great. The juxtaposition of state of the art Computer Graphics with the primitiveness of the character illustrations produced a tension that was part angst ( in the Kierkegaardian sense), part naive glee.

My little neighbor agreed that it rocked!

I think just about anyone (except maybe hoity-toity sourpusses) will be able to enjoy this.

WOW!

I loved this. All those hackneyed phrases critics like to throw around (beautiful, astounding, moving) actually apply to this anime. I can't remember the last time I was so moved and excited by an anime. I'd write more, but I wanna watch it again.

Conan wannabe fails miserably
22 April 2002
A rule of thumb that I developed some time ago is that every dollar spent on hype is two dollars NOT spent on production, and this movie certainly supports that rule. Far from being this generations "Conan The Barbarian", "Scorpion King" is more likely to be this generations "Krull". And one of the many differences between The Rock and Arnold Schwarzenegger is that you can't see the stretch marks when Arnold flexes. My advice? Rent "Conan".
