American Gothic (1995)
Thank God for netflix
I MAY have seen an episode or 2 when the show originally aired but when I watched 1 episode on netflix I was also hooked. I watched the whole series in like 2 days. :) I really liked Gary Cole's character. First he's thoroughly reprehensible then you start liking the character ("These things have a thousand uses")! His folksy Andy Griffith meets Charles Manson meets Satan is great. Charming, charismatic, smarmy, and uh kind of dangerous and by "kind of" I mean "really". I wanna be like HIM when I grow up. Lucas Black is great too. The accents are great too. Anyway, I thought this was one of the best TV shows ever and you owe it to yourself to see it.
The Village (2004)
oh, my God!
I've seen some of the other reviews here and while I can appreciate people's different perceptions of a film, I just don't understand how anyone can find anything even remotely scary (or redeeming) about this movie. The only thing I felt was irritation. First, none of the characters are likeable at all(I've read people raving about Brodie's village idiot and I suppose that makes him a good actor, but still an idiot and hardly likeable), then there's the dialogoue, which if it were in the era the movie wants you to think it is would at least be explicable, the plot itself with blind people traversing god knows how far through the woods and not getting lost, the Brotherhood of the Wolf ripoff, I can't even begin to list the things about this movie that made me dislike it. I wanted to leave and get my money back! AND, I spent like 3 days watching advertisements and trailers for MORE bad movies! Oh, and let's not forget the hysterical(and by hysterical, I don't mean funny, I mean borne of hysteria)romance element, that will leave you either speechless or groaning. What a waste! Oh, the trees at the beginning were pretty cool, but everything else was like kryptonite. When Hurt is showing his daughter the shed and telling her "try not to scream" I said to myself "I'm trying as hard as I can!" This gets a "la bomba" out of 10.
Pido nunmuldo eobshi (2002)
See it!
I read about this at Kungfu Cult Cinema and was not disappointed. On the surface it's kind of like "Thelma and Louise" meets "lock, stock and 2 smoking barrels", with some super bad-ass martial arts stuff here and there. Humorous, gritty and stylish, the movie really gets you rooting for the two protagonists, hoping for them to come out on top after being held down so long. It was also reminiscent of "Bound", which is kind of "Thelma and Louise"-ish in it's own right. This was a lot better than that movie(thelma...) to me though. I liked the characters better, anyway I really enjoyed it and I think anyone looking for something cool will like it too.
Ritânâ (2002)
I like it!
While this is derivative(you'll see stuff from several different movies, as well as the video game HALO)it was very enjoyable. It was like a live action anime at times too, the way the characters looked and I don't mean that in a bad way. The effects were good, but I just liked the characters Milli and Miyamoto. To me part of what makes a movie enjoyable is the ability to care about the principals, you know hope they succeed in whatever the plot is taking them and here you've got that little love story thing going...There was also like the spirit of like an old Godzilla movie at the end, well to me anyway :-)I don't know if I can explain it, but I did enjoy this and I also own it now, so check it out!
The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
zzzzzzz
Watching this reminded me a little of the original, where you have breath taking action interspersed with periods of explanations. In the first the explanations are needed and add to your understanding of what's going on. In Reloaded, you have action sandwiched between huge chunks of boring, unnecessary stuff. The part dealing with Zion was excruciating,"the morpheus I know used to be a good dancer"? What?! That's not what I'm getting(or what I want to get)from Morpheus' character. Add to that the caveman meets starwars way the population was depicted was weird too, I mean, here you have these super technologically advanced ships and they're designed by guys in loin cloths?
The chase scene is well done and so is the motorcycle entrance and swan dive shoot out, but Keanu Reeves performance was like a blank slate, there's no emotion shown. The albino spider brothers were a nice touch and agent Smith is more likeable than neo..
Anyway, this is NOT a 7 star movie by any stretch.
Hannibal (2001)
Ho-Hum
While being mostly true to the novel, the movie doesn't translate well from the book and ends up being what seems like interminable amounts of boring build up, punctuated with scenes of almost stomach-churning grotesqueness. Jodie Foster's absence is also notable, it's like you're just to forget she was in the first one and none of the characters are likeable, except for the hogs I guess. I would have expected more from Ridley Scott and David Mamet. Anyway, if you want to take a nap, stay home.
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)
Hip and entertaining..even if it is by madonna's boyfriend
Well crafted, yet gritty and raw with a bitchin' soundtrack, this is the kind of film we need more of. Likeable and well defined characters, neat story and the way the separate intertwining groups eventually(and inevitably) meet, is nicely done..it's a keeper.
