The Big Sky (1952)

A great, rollicking adventure.
6 March 2001
This is a story of the great American adventure; a keel boat trip up the Missouri River in 1832. No phones, no wonder drugs, no interstate highways, no TV, not even toilet paper or flush toilets; this movie is about a time when men were men, and they had to be tough to survive--or they were dead. Made during a time when sex and foul language wasn't used to sell movies, action, and the camaraderie among the men--sells this movie. A great cast makes the story come alive; Kirk Douglas is great as Jim Deakins, Arthur Hunnicutt cements his place as one of America's great character actors with his role as Uncle Zeb, and what can you say about Elizabeth Threatt--a beautiful gal with eyes that could melt an iceberg. I wish this movie was five hours long--I didn't want it to end. If you've got two hours and nothing to do, check this movie out--you won't be dissapointed.

Edge of your seat suspense from a master storyteller.
13 March 2000
Tom Clancy's tour-de-force turned into a great movie, with a great cast. Sean Connery IS Marko Ramius--he steals every scene he's in. Alec Baldwin is solid as Jack Ryan. And the supporting cast led by James Earl Jones, Scott Glenn, Sam Neill, Fred Dalton Thompson, and the late Richard Jordan is supurb. This is a suspensful thriller from the word go. The action is almost non-stop. The combat footage--both above and below the water are excellent. Hitchcock would have loved this one!

The Best Baseball Movie Ever Made!
16 November 1999
If you love baseball you'll love this film. Costner, Liotta, Madigan and James Earl Jones (one my favorite actors) give stand up performances, and Burt Lancaster shines as Moonlight Graham. But as great a baseball movie as it is, Field of Dreams isn't just about baseball, it's about life, family, reconciliation, and having a catch with Dad. Field of Dreams brings some of baseball's greatest heros back to life, I only wish they had brought back my hero...Roberto Clemente. And if you don't cry at the end of the movie when Ray asks his Dad to have a catch there is something wrong with you.

Bond is back, with a vengeance!
11 November 1999
Pierce Brosnan was born to play James Bond. He is the best 007 since Sean Connery. The action and special effects have never been better. Dame Judi Dench makes a great "M". Also, she is the perfect match for Bond's carefree, boyish charms. Joe Don Baker and Robbie Coltrain give solid performances, and the Bond women have never been better! Goldeneye puts Bond movies back where they belong--on top!

Indian Summer (1993)

The wackiest summer camp since Meatballs
11 November 1999
A great ensemble cast! A fond remembrance of younger carefree days. This movie takes me back to when I went to summer camp. Indian Summer, while full of practical jokes and pranks, is about growing up and coming to terms with life with middle-age life. My family & I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.

The Quiet Man (1952)

A simply wonderful film
10 November 1999
What's not to like about this picture? A classic directed by the legendary John Ford. John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara light up the screen. Wayne's performance is brilliant, but what really stands out is that he is playing a regular guy with real feelings and emotions--no army uniforms, no indians to fight, no cavalry coming to the rescue--just a great performance. The supporting cast is unmatched--including great performances by Victor McLaglen, Barry Fitzgerald and Ward Bond. Look closely for Ken Curtis (Festus, from Gunsmoke) in an uncredited role. The scenery is absolutly breathtaking--it makes me want to go home to Ireland--and I'm not even Irish. To top it off The Quiet Man has the greatest fist fight ever captured on film. This is one of my two favorite John Wayne movies. The Duke should have gotten an Oscar for this one. Movie viewers won't be disapointed by this one.

One of Mr. Wayne's greatest performances
10 November 1999
A great western with lots of action and drama. John Wayne is brilliant as Capt. Brittles--a role he should have won an Oscar for. As good as Wayne is, he can't carry this picture alone--he is surrounded by some of Hollywood's greatest character actors. This combination makes She Wore A Yellow Ribbon a classic for all time.
