Classic Pluto
7 January 2006
Pluto sets out to get Mickey the Weekend newspaper but meets with various disasters along the way. This is one of the quintessential Pluto comedy shorts. Pluto's solution to retrieving a dime he has accidentally dropped down the sewer is a classic Disney moment. Just watch Pluto's face to see just how much the animator could convey in these early cartoons. - His despair in loosing the coin, his hope when he comes up with an idea of how to retrieve it. His frustration when, at first his idea seems to fail, and finally, his elation at having succeeded. This is not the best Pluto cartoon, but it's certainly one of the good ones.

Boring international co-production
7 July 2001
A lot of talent was wasted in this uninspired remake of 'His Glorious Night', based on a Molnar Play. The lovely Sophia Loren is beautiful to look at as a spirited Ruritanian princess falling in love with the stereotyped brash American industrialist. There are no new ideas here. Visually, it's appealing, but with all the talent involved, it should have been much better.

Moderately entertaining remake of The Lady Eve
7 July 2001
During an transatlantic sea voyage, a card shark and his daughter, Mitzi Gaynor, cheat a wealthy simpleton out of a lot of money, but complications ensue when the the girl falls in love with the victim. David Niven is his usual charming self as the father, but George Gobel as the love interest is wooden and the film falls far short of the original. Preston Sturges directs this mixture of slapstick and sentiment. Save your money and rent the original, The Lady Eve, instead.

Another predictable romantic comedy
17 June 2001
An unexciting turn from Sandra Dee as a maid who pretends that she lives in her bosses apartment, with predictable results. Bobby Darin is usually uninspiring, and his performance is predictable. Donald O'Connor is the only bright spot in this otherwise unimaginative, makeshift romantic comedy. A routine time-waster.

Tiresome melodrama
7 February 2001
A sheep rancher (Anthony Quinn) marries his sister-in-law (Anna Magnani)from Italy, but she falls in love with his son instead. A slow-moving, over-acted melodrama with no surprises. It earned an Oscar nomination for the title song.

Beautiful
4 December 2000
Juliette Binoche gives a riveting performance as Madame La, the wife of a Captain of the guard on a small French-owned island(Saint Pierre)off the coast of Newfoundland. When a man (Emir Kusturica) is found guilty of a senseless murder and sentenced to death, the execution is postponed until a guillotine can be sent for. Meanwhile Madame La becomes interested in his fate, hoping for his rehabilitation. Daniel Auteuil gives another brilliant performance as her devoted husband. Well acted and beautifully filmed, the film is a pleasure to watch.

Somewhat dated portrayal of a woman in the 80's
6 November 2000
Melanie Mayron portrays Susan Weinblatt, a struggling photographer trying to come to terms with the loss, through marriage, of her best friend and the complexities of dating in the 80's. Mayron gives a very believable performance which lightens an otherwise dreary plot.

Hail, Hero! (1969)

Well cast but mediocre film
6 November 2000
Michael Douglas gives a very sympathetic performance as a young pacifist returning home before shipping out to Vietnam. The acting is superb in this small film about a sensitive young man trying to impress a bullying father who quite obviously sees him as a disappointment. He hopes to win his father's love and respect by enlisting in the army, imagining himself to be a great hero, but finds it difficult to bridge the chasm between himself and the old man.

This could have been a good film, but it misses the mark. A banal but not unpleasant time-waster.
