The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Magnificent movie...the best I've seen!
It's a great thing when you can finally find a movie you can definitively call "your favorite". This is mine. "The Shawshank Redemption", based on Stephen King's short novella entitled "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption", is an excellent adaptation of said literature...I will go out and say it; I've read the story and seen the movie, and although the movie took some parts out (in the story, there were three different wardens over the course of the story, and Red was Irish, not black), it expanded the detail greatly, covering parts the novella never bothered to touch on (such as Andy getting a new set of clothes and a shiny pair of shoes from the Warden ^_^). The characters are all detailed and alive, not once did I find a character unbelievable. And I've never EVER seen an ending so incredible. My eyes were wide, I was chanting "Oh My God" over and over...This movie makes you feel good all over and gives you a new perspective on life and freedom. This movie is nothing short of a masterpiece. The only fault I find is that it came out at the time as Forrest Gump, which had a lot more advertising and thus beat this great movie out in the box office. Had it come out a few months later, it would have been much more successful.
The Lawnmower Man (1992)
A movie well worth seeing
This movie truly impressed me. The special effects are pretty dated now, especially the scene where the *blocked to avoid spoiler* was caught on fire, and the computer effects are very colorful, almost like a cartoon. However, the plot was nice and satisfying, and watching Jobe change from a dumb farmer to a psychopathic genius was very interesting. It had a few niggling flaws, and is by no means a perfect movie, but it is very enjoyable and both Peirce Brosnan and Jeff Fahey give great performances!
