Gladiator (2000)
light and breezy
Beautiful to look at, but the story doesn't justify two seconds of consideration. Very possible this is what Rome looked like in Commodus' time, but even if it isn't, who cares. To me this Rome looked exactly like Berlin envisaged by Hitler and Speer, and even the Praetorian Guards looked a lot like SS-men. The way Maximus family was killed belongs more in the realm of Nazi flicks. Commodus looked exactly like Marlon Brando as Julius Caesar and he was possibly cast because of that. The end looked a lot like West Side Story, and everyone was exactly where they should stand and for a moment I expected them to burst out in a song. The opening fight was fantastic, but the rest looked too much like someones colourslides. The tigers performed beautifully. The curly-wigged stagemanager came straight out of Asterix Comic Books and also I felt like I was in a Don Martin Comic at times. I enjoyed it. What to do with a film like this?
Guest House Paradiso (1999)
as funny as very dirty underwear
I saw this film as a sneak preview regular. I wouldn't have seen it otherwise, and I strongly recommend any other movie. There is nothing funnier at times than people bumping their head and consequently being in a lot of pain. I also see much fun in riot-fags and screwed-up faces. British humor can be hilarious. But this movie has this all from beginning to end, it never stops, it never gets funnier, it has no story at all. It's claim to fame might be to show everything that is disgusting at maximum volume without a grain of wit, story or meaning. Do not waste you money on this one. If it's the only film in town, go read a book.
The Astronaut's Wife (1999)
no pay
The movie builds up promising, good actors etc. In my humble opinion (really) the movie didn't live up to it's initial promises. I even found the clue and the wrap-up pretty cheap. I don't really mind being left in the dark, but then I prefer being left completely in the dark.
