Les triplettes de Belleville (2003)
why the character design ???
This movie has a peculiar look indeed. The animation is great, the sceneries are breathtaking, the colors are beautiful, but the character design just sucks.
It reminds me of those old caricatures from the late 18th century: big noses, huge ears and so on. I was at times almost disgusted by the looks and the attitudes of those strange lobotomized-looking characters who never talked and ate garbage-looking food.
Big disappointment if you ask me!
Jisatsu sâkuru (2001)
Issues
Just saw the movie at the Brussels Fantasy Film Festival and was quite stunned by it.
Although some questions remain unanswered, the story depicts some of the most problematic issues of the Japanese society.
The suicide phenomenon among young people is related to the unlimited attraction for new trends and the lack of communication between young people and there parents.
A well directed, enjoyable (gory ) movie, with convincing actors.
I give it a 8 out of 10.
Rosetta (1999)
Real life
In Rosetta, The Dardenne brothers depict the daily (ferocious) struggle of a young girl trying to get a job by any means. For her, work means getting a life and finally being someone. But is she ready to do everything to get what she wants, even betray her only friend?
Rosetta is a movie without concessions but really rewarding for those who accept to see it through the eyes of the main character. This could be difficult though given the fact that the script never tries to make her look sympathetic. But I think it is a positive aspect of the movie. Like the directors say, she is a "warrior" before all.
Promising actress Emilie Dequenne really "is" Rosetta. You don't think "Wow, that's a good actress!" here because you face cold reality with a real life character.
For those who liked the movie, I recommend Dardenne's previous film, "La promesse", which I (very) slightly preferred.
3-4 x jûgatsu (1990)
Good but not the best Kitano
This movie contains the classical elements of Kitano's movies: Long and comical silences followed by short violent scenes, a (little) romance and nice pictures.
Paradoxically, what prevented me from REALLY REALLY enjoy the entire story of this candid boy seeking revenge were the parts with Kitano playing. They take less than half of the film but seem too out of frame here.
Anyway, the fans will surely like it (as I did).
