Pearl Harbor (2001)
See this movie!
This movie is a roller coaster of emotions. I won't go into plot details, as this is a movie that you must see. However, I will say that, what you see in this movie, you will never forget. I was honored to sit in the theatre with Pearl Harbor Survivors. This is not a "Private Ryan" movie. Pearl Harbor goes many places, and has many goals. It achieves every moment it aspires to. There will be inaccuracies no doubt. This movie may be picked apart by many. Nonetheless, one thing remains true. This did happen. Pearl Harbor was bombed, and this movie can give a glimpse of what it could have been like. This is American history. This isn't just Hollywood shoving special effects at us for a dollar. I may never have to see this movie again, because I may never forget it.
The Kid (2000)
Not what it appears to be...
The company...Disney. The title... "The Kid". This conjures up images of your child dragging you to the movie abyss for 2 hours. The truth is, you child will probably be bored, and you'll be in for a surprise.
Much of what is happening in this movie will go right over childrens heads, but will entertain you.
Willis comes out at the onset, as a character that you're wondering if you need to like to get through this movie. His ability to play a character with an edge, serves him well in this film.
Lily Tomlin, was great as a "assistant with an attitude", and well matched against Willis's rough character.
This is a movie that shouldn't be passed up. It probably won't be a blockbuster, but don't let the rental get by you. And by the way, plan on renting something else for the kids, it's just not what they will expect it to be.
I'd give it a 7.
Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo (1999)
It's not the plot, it's the antics...
The whole, "I need this much money, in this much time" plot, can start to get old. Nonetheless, this movie shouldn't be solely judged on that.
While that may be the plot for this movie, it sets up the subplots, which is where you'll find the laughs.
This may not be a movie to rush out and grab from the shelves, but if you walk by and see a copy there, it's good enough to grab!
Shanghai Noon (2000)
Flat out...good flick.
This is not simply a fighting flick. That's not to say you won't sit there at times with your jaw opened, and a puzzled look on your face. Chan will mesmerize you, while he demonstrates his mastery, and practical uses of the martial arts.
The hook though, is that the fighting is not central to the film. The film follows the standard "rescue" plot, and is almost a Western "Rush Hour".
The cultural differences between East and West play a more defining role here, and helps take this movie a bit higher. Jackie Chan uses his abilities to get laughs well in this movie, and the plot and sub plots keep you going.
I give it a 7.
