Highlander: Endgame (2000)
Do not see this movie(spoiler alert)
This movie might have been given an average rating if "They did not totally destroy the first 3 movies plots by killing off Conner MacLeod(Christopher Lambert's Character)." Destroying history via a time travel paradox still would not be a viable reason for saying that I wasted my money seeing the first 3 movies. They way this movie ended was a joke. It ends like any other highlander kill. Where is the climax, that which ties the actions of the movie together. If there was one then it was so weak that I blew by me. And I see a lot of movies and I am usually pretty forgiving but this was a waste of my time and money as well as everyone involved from concept to movie-goer.
The Cell (2000)
Great Visuals, good storyline, but lacks substance
The director apparently wanted to make a dark/light contrasting piece of artwork on the screen, which succeeded. It was a beautiful piece of visual artwork but was not supported music, acting nor character development.
The movie had potential with the visuals, story line, and Vincent D'Onofrio as the villain. Vincent D'Onofrio was under utilized as an actor with few lines that were muffled and soft not lending to a shy man with under developed social skills. Nor to a mysterious man who wishes to be anonymous. The components to suggest these things are left to the viewer's imagination. So Vincent D'Onofrio although gave a great performance he was under utilized. Also music was lacking in certain areas of the picture that could have given the audience the air of suspense or the feeling that the character was ominous.
Jennifer Lopez! What can I say? A pretty face but no substance.
Where was the terror? If she was not scared why should I be scared. Keep working on it Jennifer Lopez you almost had it. The girls in the tanks had better acting abilities.
I can not blame it all on Jennifer Lopez it was the directors fault for not bringing it all together in a nice neat package. Also what was the deal with the framing of the screen with garbage ivy stuff that has nothing to due with what Jennifer's character nor Vincent's character would have been seeing. Thus proving that the director was trying to create some visual work of art.
I gave it a 5 out of 10 for visuals.
Battlefield Earth (2000)
In this review I will compare the movie to the book.(may contain spoilers)
If you read and liked the book, you will be disappointed. If you have not then there may be hope but not likely. If you are not a fan of John Travolta do not go see this movie as his face is seen every other minute.
The book spans 3+ years and the movie zips through a series of events that took a year in the book. The book explains that after 1000 years equipment such as cars, tanks, and planes will turn to rust. This is a very good assumption. But not according to the movie it seems that Harriers somehow managed to survive this time span intact. In the book as well as the movie there is an alien learning machine that can fill the users mind of knowledge in minutes that would normally take years. But trying to compare a Harrier flight simulator to one of these is not going to cut the cheese but yet it is still full of hot air. Training to fly a Harrier should at least take months of training for a technology literate man, yet the movie leads us to believe that a regressed man with no technology base, no alien learning machine, and with seven days to train can learn to fly, and excellent flying at that.
Needless to say that the charactor development in this movie was lacking.
The special effects, acting abilities, and action were all good. That is the only good thing that I have to good to say about it.
If I had not read the book, I might have been able to halfway enjoy myself.
To sum things up. Given all the raw materials for a great movie, story, actors, special effects, director, and budget. Why did they have to butcher the book so much is beyond me.
5 out of 10 if I had not read the book but 3 out of 10 after reading the book.
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
Freaky movie, read this if you are taking the bad reviews seriously this could be a spoiler.
Those that are not scared by this movie do so because they miss the point, are only scared by gore, they do not fear death because they think they are invincible, and/or they do not have the ability to remove themselves from their seats in the theaters and place themselves in the charactor's role.
It is NOT: The movie is not a Big Hollywood Production with all the bells and whistles that todays horror flicks have in common. It is not meant to be known whether this is fictional or not. It is not shot on a sound stage. It is not accompanied by a full orchestra to entertain you through the slow moments. It does not have a unbelievable plot. There is not any supernatural effects in this movie.
It IS: It is meant to be seen as a true event. There are 3 film collage students out to make a documentary film. Being film students they are over zealous and tape everything. They more likely tape things zealously to extenuate their situation. The movie is supose to be a timeline compliation of the film and camra work done by the missing students. If you have ever gone camping and heard noises which you could not identify then you can relate easily to the reactions the students have. Their terror is a acurate portrayal of common fears and justly so. The movie is very realistic. It is this realism that makes this movie chilling.
I do not scare easily but the next time I go camping I hope I do not remember this film.
Happy Movie Going.
