Wisconsin Death Trip (1999)
An unsettlingly stark look at the grim details of one small town's history.
Unapologetically dark. Unashamedly morbid and moody. This documentary offers an alternative, more realistic, depiction of American life at the turn of the twentieth century. Mundane elements of work, love, marriage, and simple existence in the American North are swept up in an undercurrent of darkness that reminds the viewer that history is not all presidents, education, and industry. This documentary offers both sides of life, not just the common, brightly lit portion that is outlined in popular media and historical documents. This is all not to say, however, that the film is oppressive or grotesque: accounts of insanity, murder, and tragedy are intermixed with elements of black humor and sarcasm. Well worth the hour-and-a-half running time.
Gojira vs. Supesugojira (1994)
Not for the uninitiated...
An excellent addition to the series which ties together elements from three previous films (Godzilla 1985, Godzilla vs. Biollante, and Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth). The good premise of the human desire for revenge against G and the lasting ecological and cosmological effects of the creature's continued existence is cheapened, however, by three (3) principal flaws:
1)Lackluster battle scenes that move far too slowly to hold viewer's attention
2)Gratuitous, obscure plot points that contribute nothing to the story, such as the Yokuza (Japanese mafia) kidnapping the psychic female protagonist
3)An obnoxiously "cute" baby Godzilla that would be more at home in the "champion of children" Godzilla flicks from the '60s.
Overall, great fun for the Godzilla fanatic.
