The Spanish Prisoner (1997)

Everythings not what they seem...

Take for example this film. High hopes- high fall. Nothing about this movie can be considered good. The dialouge is stiff and very unnatural. Bad acting - very bad acting. Bad directing - very bad directing. I suppose this film in script stage was going to be a mindbender but executives thought it was to complicated for the average american so they forced a rewrite and spoiled the whole concept. The end was laughable. The woman at the airport saying the same thing ten times to her son, the thing that made the main character understand the whole thing. Hello!?! And the female character that repeated everything twice! Things like: -You never know who you can trust. -Things are not always what they seem. Like the actor portaying the hero didn´t hear it the first time.

Stay away from this one. And referring to Hitchcook is plain and simple an insult to the great master.

Divorcing Jack (1998)

One of 99´s best films...

..and one of the best I have seen in a long time. (Ok it was made in 98 but it has just been released on video here in Sweden) This movie was a surprise! I´m fortunate to be able to rent movies for free (if I were not I would probably never have seen this one) and am I glad I did see it!. It´s funny, it got lots of action and crazy characters whom you really care for. It got a great story, great actors and actresses it is simply great! I want more of this kind of movies! Go rent this one today or you will miss a piece of excellence!

Only negative thing is that the editor made a lousy job in the beginning.

New Rose Hotel (1998)

Still not Abel to write a good story.

I´ve seen a couple of Abel Ferrara movies, Bad Lieutenant being the best, but all of them lack the one most important thing: a storyline, events that pushes the story forward. And this one is no different. Lots of sex, things that happens that makes no sense and again no storyline just scenes. It´s "based" on a short story by William Gibson but there is no cyber about this movie. It seems to been made with no budget. No action, no f/x but good actors and pretty good dialogue. So if you want to see a movie with good acting and good dialogue and don´t really care about storyline this ones for you. But if you want a good story stay away from this one.

Virus (1999)

Great popcorn movie!

Saw this one on DVD last night and I really liked it. It was a fast paced comicbookaction popcorn movie with scares that made me jump the chair a couple of times. The story is nothing new. We´ve seen it numerous times before. Like Alien. But nothings original these days anyway. The FX where great and I liked the frankensteinish look of it. It rates high on my popcornmovie chart.

Black Dog (1998)

B-Action with a budget.

This movie is pretty good, if you like action movies. The action sequences where good, the acting so-so, the story well... it is an action movie. The only thing you keep wondering is: What the hell has Patrick Swayze done with his face?. So, if it´s a rainy day and you´ve seen all the good big-budget action movies at your local videostore then rent this one. It´s far better than the average b-action movie.

This is the kind of movie you don´t watch for the great acting or great story. This is the kind of movie you watch for the great action. Having seen some of the recently released genremovies and being disappointed by most of them this one was a nice surprise. Great action sequences! Far better than the usual b-movie action. They really went for it this time thou they easily could have made just the ordinary type of action. One scene in particular is great. It´s a car chase on rooftops!So if you want to see a good lowbudget actionmovie see this one!

Nightwatch (1997)

This is a great movie.

First of all, I don´t quite understand those who think this movie is badly written and badly executed and someone wrote it lacked good dialogue? But then most of them were americans and as most americans they were surely brought up on cheap television and Hollywood movies. And who can blame them. USA is the land of trashcinema. Well, this movie is quite different for the ordinary Hollywood thriller but then it´s a remake of an excellent Danish film. Watched the remake after the original so all the surprises were spoiled for me but I enjoyed every minute of it ´cause it´s excecuted excellenty. The photo was superb, made me think of the thrillmaestro Hitchcook´s work. As for the revelation of the killer, well I thought they could have stretched it out a bit so that we the viewers realized who it is at the same time as Martin does. And then there was the barscene wich they could have dropped. But all in all it´s a great movie but the original is better. 4/5.

Tale of the Mummy (1998)

Big name, low budget.

Don´t get fooled by Cristopher Lee´s name, he´s only in the movie the first few minutes. The FX is pretty good but overall this is just another lowbudget movie where they try to spend as little cash-per-minute as possible and selling it on a big name. Some good scenes but mostly a "fast-forward-button" movie. But it´s better than the average lowbudget horrormovie but easily forgotten.

Arrival II (1998)

Probably one of the worst movies I ever seen

First of all, I really enjoyed the first one so I had my hopes for this sequel. All I can say is that this movie was so bad it will boogle your mind why it was even considered to be made. The story sucks, the script seems to have been written by a kindergarten kid. It´s so bad!. And it looks to be made from no budget at all with the usual boilerroom sequence with very very cheap scares. The fx where pretty descent but all in all this is a movie that simply should not have been done.
