Sorry for the people who didn't like this film.
14 January 2002
A suggestion for the people who HATED this movie: go rent The Fast and the Furious and Gone in 60 Seconds and make it an AWESOME Saturday night. This film is wonderful, from start to finish. Like Bottle Rocket, it shows off Owen Wilson's hilarious ability to banter. The thing that I love the most about Wes Anderson's films are the subtle things. Ex. Luke Wilson and Bill Murray have a scene where they face each other the whole time, then when they are done speaking, they turn and look past the camera. WHAT WAS THAT?! I laughed, saying that like 10 times during this movie. Also, what was up with those murals of the guys in Kubucki masks on 4x4s?!?! Hilarious. This movie is the best I have seen in 2002.

What a horrible movie! Even worse than Miss Congeniality
6 August 2001
Wow! Where are the words to describe how horrible this movie is? Now, I am not an idiot to believe that every movie in the world should be truthful and realistic, but I believe I would meet Jar Jar Binks before I would see a character so idiotic make it into Harvard Law. I mean, I know that several real-life Harvard grads sent in video essays explaining their knowledge of Days of Our Lives, but in a swimming pool? That is a little bit of a stretch. At least they invented some sort of "actual" Supreme Court decision to allow her to try a case without passing the bar. This was insipid and insulting, and any young girl who LOVES this movie probably has less brain power than the characters portrayed within. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT WATCH THE PIECE OF GARBAGE. Or do, and giggle to your girlfriend, "Oh my God! I can't believe how good that was!"

Not worth it
17 March 2001
De Niro needs a new agent. I guess he was drunk when he read the script to this movie, because Fifteen Minutes was not a good one. Most major characters are MASSIVE stereotypes, with the tough-nails-cop/fire marshal played by Burns, the cop who loves the media attention in De Niro, and the heartless reporter played by Kelsey Grammar. First of all, I don't care if you are Dan Rather, you cannot get a network to play a murder of a police officer on television. And I am so sick and tired of this cold blooded reporter image in movies. The news media, no matter what people think, is NOT the devil. No reporter would act in the way Grammar did, and I am surprised that he agreed to play such a poorly written character. The one thing that I did almost save the movie was the acting of Karel Roden and Oleg Taktarov. It seems that the Russian Bear can act as well as kick your ass. The are interesting villains in an insane, idiotic movie. I feel sorry for anyone who loved this movie, and why don't you go out and rent Die Hard 2 or Con Air? Also, Ed Burns needs to find a new character. The tough Brooklynite act got old after The Brothers McMullen and Saving Private Ryan.

The Burning Bed (1984 TV Movie)

Wow! What a bad movie!
3 February 2001
Ok, I don't want to sound like I am insensitive toward spousal abuse, just because I am a man, but this movie was the most unrealistic portrayal of a battered woman I have ever seen. This movie did in fact start the Lifetime Victim-of-the-week movie series, and I would not have been surprised to see Meredith Baxter-Birney in this movie. Just because this was one of the first movies about spousal abuse doesn't make it good. I was often left puzzled during the movie when Fawcett could not get the police to have her husband removed from her home, even though they were divorced and he did not live there. HELLO?! It's called trespassing! Paul Le Mat was also on probation when he hit a police officer. They said he would be going to jail for parole violation, but apparently they had to edit that part out for times sake. Also, she didn't even lock her door, so the Bastion of Hell, who just happens to live next door, can just walk right in and beat the crap out of her. Even more amazing is the fact that Fawcett's mother in the movie seems to excuse her son-in-law's beatings. Why? I can see his own mother defending him, but I would just love to see an abuse case where the victim's mother takes the side of the guy who is beating the holy hell out of her daughter. Also, the acting was not good at all. Paul Le Mat reached the apex of horrible acting in the scene where he burns Fawcett's school books. "Schoolin'! When you gonna stop this schoolin'?" WASN'T THE MOVIE SET IN MICHIGAN?!? Why are they talking like the are from Mississippi? But, I can't complain too much, because it just follows the same standard that most movies that are based on real life events do. Just do yourself a favor and don't watch this movie.

Cop-out and misleading ads
25 March 2000
I would say that disappointed is an understatement with this film. Despite Mr. Polanski's previous triumphs, he fails with The Ninth Gate. The trailers and ads for the movie show it as a satanic journey with demons and monsters all along the way.

While the search drives the movie, the plot is not spiced up by any really interesting demon depictions or special effects.

Also, the ending is one of the biggest cop-outs I have ever seen, and thus angered me even further. Avoid this movie unless you are interested in wasting your time

Weird and boring
9 May 1999
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know what you are thinking. This guy is nuts for saying it stunk. AFI top 100, but it is too strange for my taste. Personally, I don't like most of Kubrick's works, but it takes all kinds. If you are into boring sci fi, this one is for you. I will take Star Wars anyday
