Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years (1977)
A credit to all concerned
Todays film makers should all be made to view this production. Without a single curse word, car chase, or sex scene, this flawless series does credit to all concerned. It is difficult to single out any member of this work for every element of it is exemplary. It simply entertains at every level, while giving a true history lesson. Every person involved in this gem must be very proud, and with every justification.
The Bridges of Madison County (1995)
If it's boring,it must be Iowa
Before seeing this movie I read a review by Roger Ebert, with dictionary at hand I managed to understand about 50% of it,but it was a rainy night and heck, whats 5 bucks. Told in flashback the story really begins with a truck pulling up to a farmhouse in Iowa. A Man emerges he seems to be in his seventies the truck in its thirties he is a photographer on assignment looking for the bridges of Madison County.he is lost. Considering the age of man and truck,God must have dropped every thing to help them to get this far. The woman of the house is alone, having some sort of death wish she offers to get in the truck and show him the way.right.As they ride off into the Iowa countryside we wonder if they will find the bridges or more to the point, who will expire first the man or truck.Call me a cynic but I took the points and bet on the truck. Returning to the farmhouse Francesca who is on a roll asks him to dinner, she seems to get her lines from a supply of fortune cookies with gems such as "We are the choices we have made" and to break the tension,"would you like some iced tea" not exactly Noel Coward but hey this is Iowa. Francesca speaks with an accent that could only have originated in a Mexican section of Boston. The rest of the Movie or as Roger would say the "Film" is a little hazy as naps kept interrupting my following of the story and vice versa. In the end "The Bridges of Madison County" leaves many questions, did Francesca pass on the secrets of life to her children? Did Robert go on to explore the mysteries of life such as the Subways of Paris or the poems of Bob Dylan? Did Francesca's husband ever plow the north forty? As for myself, I wonder what became of that truck?
Rhapsody in Blue (1945)
George deserved better
Warner Bros. has little to be proud of here, this bio has the look of being made on a small budget with Warner contact players. Joan Leslie seems badly miscast as a musical comedy star and Gershwin's lost love. But even the shortcomings of the film cannot take away from his music. Let's hope that his story is told someday by someone who cares.
