Crossroads (2002)
Oh come on, it's not that bad!
OK, so there have been more original plots but, to be fair, most romantic films are predictable. The backlash against this film seems rather exaggerated given that overall it was a reasonably enjoyable film - I've even coped with it twice, so it can't be that terrible! The acting in it was fine: Britney put on a worthy show given her lack of experience and Taryn Manning gave a good performance and generally the cast was extremely likeable. They tried their hardest without the most inspiring material in the world, and it is actually funny in parts! Just get over your negative preconceptions before seeing the film and you never know, you might even enjoy it!
Hope Springs (2003)
No actor could save the sinking script
It was just plain awful, the plot line was bizarre in the extreme and yet made even more odd by complete misnomers that sprung up randomly. For instance, the alcoholic scene, for which no justification is given, which seems completely irrelevant, and is never mentioned again. Also, not content with creating a happy ending for the hero and heroine, they have to create another one for the unchosen one so that she doesn't just run away crying at the end, so they do it in the form of an insane consolation prize which 1) she has no reason to win and 2) no reason to want to win. The whole thing is just terrible. It amazing that three such strong actors would want to associate themselves with such dribble. They did their best, but sadly it was dead in the water.
