Deja Vu (2006)
A film to make you think
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and enjoyed the way that everything came together at the end. It is true that you can think about it deeply and maybe spot inconsistencies, but they introduce the split timeline theory halfway thru to explain all that away.
If you liked this movie then you should see a relatively unknown independent movie called Primer. It is about some guys who invent a time machine and is really nicely put together on a very low budget. The reason being that it doesn't tie up the loose ends so you'll literally spend hours trying to figure out what the hell is (or was) going on.
As with this film, if they had tied up the loose ends completely, it would've been dull. At least it makes you think.
Sur mes lèvres (2001)
Compelling French thriller
I was totally engrossed in this film from the first to last minute. It is brilliantly shot, with lots of interesting and original camera angles and techniques employed. The plot surrounds a deaf woman who is picked on by friends and colleagues alike. She hires an assistant at work, with her true intention being to find love. He's an ex-con and she takes advantage of him to wreak revenge on those who have hurt her. In return she must help him with a heist that requires her lip reading skills to pull it off. The film transcends into a dark film noir, with a couple of truly excellent scenes, and an even better finale. The real beauty in this film comes from the way the director takes advantage of the leading character's disability. The use of sound keeps the tension consistent, and the dramatic shifts from silence to noise keeps the blood pumping, that's for sure. Throw in a little black comedy and undertones of erotic sexual repression you've got the makings of a great film. It's the sort of film Hollywood really wants to make, but just can't.
Human Traffic (1999)
Sheer Class
It is hard to say a bad thing about this film. From start to finish it is realistic, funny and very entertaining. It is full of memorable scenes that left me falling into the aisle with laughter. Any young adult, who has been clubbing, or still enjoys that hedonistic lifestyle will totally empathise with the group in the film. Bored sick of their jobs, they live for the weekends, and this particular one is a big one for all concerned.
It is soooo good, I've seen it twice already and the second time had me more riveted than the first. Even near the end of the film I was looking forward to the scenes coming up and still laughing at the previous ones.
This film even manages to throw in a little bit of education and to say it promotes drug use is nonsense, it presents a balanced view that allows the non-user to decide whether the good outweighs the bad. Believe me, they show the BAD.
If you haven't seen this film yet you have to ask yourself 'Why?'. Go and see it yesterday.
