Centennial Summer (1946)
A very rare movie, but a long-time favorite.
This was the film that introduced me to the world of classic movies. Jeanne Crain has since been one of my all-time favorite actresses.
This is a great musical and represents Jerome Kern's last creative effort before his untimely death. It's set around the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. When the Rodgers family receives a visit from their Aunt Zenia who is accompanied by Philippe (a dashing Frenchman who arrives to set up the French Pavilion for the Centennial), the excitement of the exposition is heightened. Edith decides to forget her engagement to Ben, in order to pursue Philippe, but Philippe actually has eyes for Julia. When Edith tells Philippe that it is Julia who is actually engaged to Ben, he loses hope. Julia and Ben then play out a make-believe romance to make Philippe jealous and bring Edith back to Ben.
All the while, the Rodgers mother is having troubles of her own...keeping her husband out of the romantic whirl of Zenia's man collection.
A fun, romantic, musical-comedy, with gorgeous costumes and a nice soundtrack. This is one that needs to be released on video!
Disneyland: Escapade in Florence: Part 1 (1962)
A fun Disney caper set in beautiful Italy.
This is a fun movie, filmed on location in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Annette is a student studying art, and Tommy discovers an old painting underneath one of her paintings. He believes it to be an original piece of art, and tries to convince his friends that it's not an old copy. But Tommy discovers a secret behind the painting, and gets caught in the middle of an elaborate forgery scheme.
A lot of fun, and an old favorite.
Our Hearts Were Young and Gay (1944)
Hilarious fun travels overseas!
They were just two American girls on vacation... who bring chaos wherever they go. What a fun movie. I love the little incident with the rabbit coats. You could never believe that anything in the movie was true until you read the book. It even states "Lest the reader should be in any doubt, we wish to state that the incidents in this book are all true and the characters completely non-fictitious." Once you see the film read the book! Like the film, it will keep you laughing!
The Slipper and the Rose: The Story of Cinderella (1976)
A wonderful movie finally coming to video in America!!
This story of Cinderella is the best version I have ever ever seen. Richard Chamberlain is wonderful and Gemma Craven is positively charming.
Filmed partly on location in Austria, the scenery is beautiful and the sets and costumes very authentic. Part of what makes this movie so great is that the music helps tell the story. The music is beautiful and the lyrics, although at times very comical, are very important in building the characters, and expressing their emotions.
Perhaps one of the most interesting points of this movie is the fact that they address the question of Cinderella not being of Royal blood. It actually adds a nice twist to the story, but of course, Cinderella eventually gets her Prince.
This brilliant musical has been my ultimate favorite since I was about 12 years old. And at long last, it is finally coming to VHS and DVD.
