Die zweite Heimat: Chronik einer Jugend (1992)
Thoughts and feelings of the best film of all time
You could be forgiven for passing over this movie or not having seen it all because you won't see it up for rental in Blockbusters, or for sale in HMV. And even the local cultural film centre would think twice about screening it - all TWENTY-SIX HOURS! But I was one of the lucky ones fortunate enough to catch the 13 two hour episodes shown on BBC2 and will always remember a movie which captures beautifully the lives and loves of the youth of a post-war Germany, indecisive and confused at what went before them and what future lays ahead. To many this may seem political, too boring, but the narrative and direction is inspiring and addictive as you follow the paths of these young adults and watch them grow and learn about a brave new world, fighting their history to form a new identity. 10/10.
Ghost Town (1988)
Quick, sharp overview
Possibly the most overlooked and under-rated horror movie of all time. An original idea, well put together, should deserve more respect than the 'getting dusty on a video store shelf' this film received. Good movie. 8/10.
The Man Who Would Be King (1975)
Charming review, Daniel
The combined abilities of Sean Connery and Michael Caine add class and charm to a brilliant story of British courage and greed. It serves well to sum up what was and is good and bad about a tiny nation who once ruled the World. The film is very much a fairy tale deploying a great deal of both humour and action to spin a yarn about 2 ex-soldiers in colonial India who set off in search of treasure and fame and encounter their fair share of difficulties in trying to do so. An absolute classic. 9/10.
