Digimon: Digital Monsters (1999)
NOT a Pokemon ripoff!
When I first started watching 'Digimon', I thought "Egad! *Blatant* 'Pokemon' ripoff!" but I kept watching. And the more you get into it, the less like 'Pokemon' it is. Whereas 'Pokemon' has three children wandering aimlessly trying to collect monsters and badges, 'Digimon' has a much sterner task for the protagonists, namely saving the Digital world and the real world. Whereas 'Pokemon' is rather westernised for anime and is relatively straightforward and vaguely formulaic, 'Digimon' has a new surprise every episode and is very peculiar at times. Give 'Digimon' a chance and I guarantee you'll end up liking something about it, if not the whole series for itself.
Watercolour Challenge (1998)
Surprisingly excellent to watch
I know what you're thinking. It's England, home of the fly-on-the-wall docusoap about what fun it is to paint flowerpots. But daytime TV has actually yielded a gem, in the form of 'Watercolour Challenge'. Even people who aren't interested in art can't possibly fail to be interested in this programme. Three amateur artists have four hours in which to complete a watercolour painting of a landscape. It sounds dull but if you watch it, you'll understand why more and more people are tuning in.
All the Little Animals (1998)
I don't care what anyone says, I loved this film.
Okay, I admit it, the only reason I rented this film was because Christian Bale was in it (and someone else had rented 'As Good As It Gets') but I certainly don't regret choosing this film instead for one minute. Certainly, some of the characterisation is a little weak and it did take a definite turn for the bizarre near the end. Still, the messages were there and they were strong and they make sense. We are all here for a reason and no one has any right to take existence away. This film affected me more than any other film in the last couple of years.
