Agnes Browne (1999)
A Bittersweet Journey
Agnes Browne was a surprise and a delight. I love the relationship between the two women friends. I love Marion's approach to religion and Agnes's no nonsense child rearing. The way they mispronounce words and /or misuse them throughout the movie is amusing and endearing. The quaint open air market and the Irish loan shark add a colorful dimension to a fairly predictable story line. There is one well-done twist in the story that makes the whole journey bittersweet.
Fight Club (1999)
Not What You Expect
I agreed with my husband to rent this movie if he would also rent a "chick flick" for me! I was very pleasantly surprized by this movie. Edward Norton is wonderful as always, spinning his character's web around the viewer until Wham...he gets you! Helena Bonham Carter was outrageous! I think of her in period pieces like Room With A View, Howard's End or Twelfth Night. She is the perfect anti-social, bi-polar, opinionated, cheap chic urban wench. Brad Pitt was "over the top" (even his clothes are oddly in your face) as the fight club co-founder -which was exactly the right portrayal. Meatloaf was also notable as Bob.
The final minutes of the film, you begin to put it all together along with Norton and wonder why you never saw it before! I usually can spot a plot twist a mile off but this was superbly done. Don't miss this movie because you think it will be just another testosterone flood.
The Road to Wellville (1994)
I Had Such Hopes!
When I heard that Road to Wellville was made into a movie, starring Hopkins and Broderick, I was very eager to see it. All those weird, idiosyncratic things that are my home town's heritage would be charmingly explained on the silver screen. Alas, it was not to be. The book was well written, the movie was disappointing. The director seemed focused on enemas and did not relate all the other wonderful, bizarre and interesting treatments. My advice...read the book.
Grandview, U.S.A. (1984)
This Will Be Known
This movie will be known for being the worst film made by many of these popular actors & actresses. It's not that their performances reek; it is simply uninspired in every possible way. The script, the character portrayals, the camerawork, etc. etc.
She-Devil (1989)
British vs American
I had seen the British mini-series on PBS and adored it...glib, vengeful, witty and wicked. Meryl Streep in the Mary Fisher role was wonderfully cast. However, the US version somehow lost its edge in the translation. ;-)
Shining Through (1992)
The Spy Who Disappointed Me
I read the book and thoroughly enjoyed it. (It was not a stretch to believe that this could happen.) Then, as often happens with books I like, I began to mentally cast the book and stage the movie. Michael Douglas was good choice for the steely and mysterious male lead. But Melanie? Her voice alone puts me off her for this role in any language. I never bought her as courageous and brilliant. She has been very good in other roles but this was not one of them.
Mission: Impossible (1996)
Star Vehicle VS. Ensemble
What I enjoyed most about the series, Mission Impossible, was that the characters in the story could never succeed in their mission without the others to back them up with their various types of expertise and steely nerves. It was suspenseful wondering if one person might not make it or slip up.
The entire team is killed off in the beginning of the movie and Tom Cruise recruits a few people to support him ever-so-slightly while he carries out his personal mission for the truth. Not as tense and exciting as it could have been.
