The Boys (1998)
A brilliant Australian Film
What a Movie...this movie was impacting, and left a sour taste in my mouth. Brett Sprague was an extremely nasty piece of works. David Wenham brought the character of Brett to life so brilliantly. I was in fear of this character, and what was the most frightening aspect was that this character felt real... not a "Freddy Kruger" type of unbelievable scary character, but a TRUE nightmare... there are people like Brett out there in the world, and that was what was so frightening for me. This movie had a tremendous sense of fear and danger throughout. Every performance was outstanding, especially those of David Wenham, Toni Collette and Lynette Curran. The women in the film sensed the imminent danger, but the brothers were just hopelessly and dangerously in awe of their brother, Brett. This is Australian film making at its best, and I would like to commend our film industry with taking risks, and encouraging our artists to continue to make wonderfully original and creative films. Congratulations to all concerned.
The Interview (1998)
Another World-class Australian Film
This movie is a gem! What a great psycho-drama/thriller. Did he or didn't he? This movie draws you in from the very first frame. It's tense and claustrophobic, with excellent performances, especially from Hugo Weaving, great lighting and direction. I highly recommend this film and I am delighted to see such fine craftsmanship come out of our very own film industry. The standard of films this year has been truly outstanding...the A.F.I. has a hard task judging the best this year.
Black Beauty (1994)
I am 10 y.o. this is one of my favourite films.
This is my favorite movie because the horse tells the story, unlike any other horse movies.
Jesus Christ Superstar (1973)
How J.C.S. influenced my life
I was 10 years old when I first saw this movie and what an impression it made! After years of listening to my parents old music this movie turned me on to music. I loved the music, the colours, the scenery, and oh, those beautiful people. I had never seen so many gorgeous men in one film. I can't begin to tell you the lasting impression that this film left on a young and impressionable mind. It influenced the way I dressed from then on in, the music I listened to, the men I was attracted to and also opened up in me a desire to learn about Jesus and Christianity that I had not had before. For me this film was a religious experience. Because of my love of this film, I went to see the stage-play also, my very first theatrical experience, and there started my love of theatre. Many people may say they loved this film, though few, I believe, could say that it influenced them, as much as it did me. So when I rate this film, I rate it with all the love and passion that I had as a child racing off at every single opportunity to see this film on the big screen. I now watch at home on video and marvel at the breathtaking cinematography, (and still, those beautiful men), though these days I must admit, I do find it a little "camp".It will always be one of my very favourite films... and the movie soundtrack is by far the very best recording of Jesus Christ Superstar!
The Godfather (1972)
my favourite film, "The Godfather"
Words are hard to find, to describe my love of this film. Every time I view this film I still find something to marvel at... something that I had missed on previous viewings. I too, believe that this is a flawless film. On one viewing, I was struck by the use of lighting in the film, how contrasting the lighting was. The use of light and dark, so beautifully used throughout the film, to me, symbolised the light and dark of these characters, and the world in which they lived. I love the portrayals of Mario Puzo's characters... Marlon Brando was superb.I loved watching Michael Corleone change from a naive young war-hero to a ruthless mafia godfather. I loved each of the characters in this film. That is one of the things that I like best about this film... that these ruthless men worked their way into my heart, casting away any judgement I would usually hold against people who do the hideous crimes that these men saw as merely work and necessary protection for their beloved family. I love their self-righteousness and even their lack of conscience. I am passionate about this film ... every damn aspect of it!!!
