A Writing Credit?
3 January 2008
I was greatly amused at the writing credit for Bernard MacLaverty. Oh, you mean when that one guy said nothing or that other man didn't speak. Yeah, that's quotable stuff, all right. Certainly he wrote placement material used by the producer, although it is an absolute affront to say that he "wrote" anything.

Still, it does give me a specific to use when pretentious people drool over lesser-known films. I can now praise MacLaverty's dialog and see what unfolds from there.

The anonymity of the actions does reinforce the idea that violence can come at any turn and is never a proper solution. For that, I appreciated the film and its intent.

Startup.com (2001)
Like looking in the mirror of my life
16 June 2001
The only person involved in this venture who made money was the third company founder who was bought out for $700,000 after investing only $19,000 and a few hours after work for four months. What a deal.

This movie captured the over-emphasis on people's feelings. The characters said more than once they didn't care what the VC people thought. What? These are the folks who bankrolled you! Anyone who disagreed with them "didn't get it".

Having spent time in this industry, I can honestly say that I have learned a lot, although I got about as rich as the characters in this movie.

The movie is not uplifting or educational in any way, but it is a realistic presentation of the rise and fall of a dot-com. For a more humorous representation of the IT industry, watch "Office Space".

A Complete Disappointment
15 April 2001
Pam's family is supposed to be a loving, caring group, but apparently don't see that they are psychologically torturing Greg. He was the only one who had his life in order and was attempting to relate to others. The recurring theme was that every tragedy that the family faced was somehow Greg's fault.

I was amazed at how disappointed I was in the movie. I am a great fan of both Mr. De Niro and Mr. Stiller. Still, I could not bear to finish the film. This is one of the few movies I have ever stopped watching while in progress. I returned it to the video store to get the thing out of my sight.

Office Space (1999)
Too Close to Reality
15 April 2001
Anyone who has ever worked in the IT industry can tell you that the scenes in "Office Space" are reality. I love this film and I highly recommend it to anyone who has ever groaned when forced to attend one of those ridiculous team-building sessions at work. The mandatory fun gatherings were captured perfectly in the party for Lumbergh.

The moment when Samir break-dances is priceless. It is played on the JumboTron whenever the Carolina Hurricanes hockey team scores a goal.

Michael, the white gangsta, is hilarious in the way he denigrates the musician who shares his name. He can't bear the thought of being associated with that no-talent clown.

Also, I now cannot look at "PC Load Letter" on an HP LaserJet without laughing.

The Wayans disappointed me
23 July 2000
I have loved the Wayans' sense of humor all the way back to when Keenan was in "Hollywood Shuffle". "Menace to South Central" is one of my favorite comedies. But this movie made me want to ask for a refund.

This movie was not funny beyond the previews I had already seen on TV. If you laughed at them, be happy with that and save your money. You have seen every funny part in the film..

I liked Shorty a lot, especially the way he referred to everyone as, "Son", even the female characters.

For everyone who has praised this movie so far, you are entitled to your opinion. I strongly disagree with you. This movie was terrible.

Hilarious
23 July 2000
This movie is wonderful. It points out all of the absurdities of the earlier 'hood movies. You need to have seen most of the movies being parodied in order to see the true depth of the humor in this movie.

Absolutely one of my favorite light comedies with "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka" and "Half Baked". I can't put it in a category with "Airplane" because that is the standard by which all other parodies are measured.

Every cliche of the 70s is busted wide-open here
22 June 1999
Every cliche of the 70s is busted wide-open here. I think it is such a great parody of blaxploitation movies - the pimp, the ballplayer-turned actor, The Man, etc. Everyone is perfect in their role.

There are too many funny lines to pick a favorite. I love this film so much.

I have seen this movie many, many times and it is funny every time I see it.
