Demons (1985)

The confusing mess that is the 'Demons' series
6 May 2005
In 1985, 'Demoni' (the original Italian title) was such an international success that director Lamberto Bava and producer Dario Argento quickly followed it with 'Demoni 2' in 1986. While mostly a proper sequel, there are several puzzling elements not the least of which was the reuse of actors whose characters were killed in the first film for new characters in the sequel ... yeah, I know!!

After that, things get a little funky.

In 1988, Lamberto filmed 'Casa del L'Orco' for Italian television. Internationally it was sold as another 'Demoni' sequel, hence the title: 'Demons III: The Ogre' for R1 DVD. According to an interview included on the Shriek Show release, Lamberto did not create this as a sequel to 'Demoni'. That title must have been made up by a distributor. Once again, you'll again find re-used actors from 'Demoni' and 'Demoni 2', but since Lamberto did not make this as a sequel, it's kind of a non-issue.

In 1989, Michele Soavi (he played the masked man seen in 'Demoni') directed and co-wrote 'La Chiesa' ('The Church'). The script was co-written by many others, including fellow 'Demoni' alumni Dario Argento and Dardano Sachetti. This film further adds to the confusion by occasionally being titled 'Demons 3' internationally.

In 1994, Michele Soavi made a big name for himself with the widely respected 'Dellamorte Dellamore' (released in R1 as 'Cemetary Man'). Why mention it here? Well, *THAT* film has also, rather inexplicably, been titled 'Demons 95' in at least one Region 2 DVD release.

There may be others, but for my own two cents, I consider 'Demoni' and 'Demoni 2' to be the only proper 'Demons' films... although 'La Chiesa' is so close, it almost makes it as well.

I hope this helped!

has to be better than Pokemon
21 August 2000
I can't believe ANYONE can say anything good about Pokemon while they trash this series. DigiMon may not be high-minded, but at least there is dialog and SOME thought put into it. Watching DigiMon gives the same feeling one gets when playing a video game like Legend of Zelda or Secret of Mana.

If that's not your bag, then you should know better than to see something like this anyway. The only similarity DigiMon has to Pokemon is the name (Digital Monsters/Pocket Monsters). There is actual adventure and character development in the Digimon shows. I watch them almost every morning with my son.

Pokemon may have a good thing going so I can't blame them for wanting to keep making money, but no one will ever convince me that any effort is put into it. Even South Park has better animation than Pokemon does, and those guys are *trying* to look sucky! DigiMon is well drawn and computer enhanced to boot.

This is one kids' movie that I won't mind watching this year.

Enjoyable - at times genuinely frightening.
2 November 1999
It's been a long time since the word "frightening" really applied to horror movies. It seems that 1999 has seen the end of that. Where The Haunting remake failed, this remake of The House On Haunted Hill comes to lead us into a new era of horror movies that actually seem to aim for fear. There are some inconsistancies along the way, but most people will not notice on the first viewing - I didn't. It is safe to say that if you actually LIKE horror movies, you will enjoy this. If, however, you are one of the weirdos out there who likes to go watch horror movies just so that they can say how much they hate them, you won't have any fun. I must say that the ending could have easily a) made more sense and b) been scarier, without the lame CGI (when are they gonna learn!!!!!!!).

Sour Candy blows...
3 July 1999
Well, what can I say. They could have left well enough alone. But they never do, do they? So, once again, what we have here is another mostly useless sequel to another great horror classic that has now become a franchise. As I type this, Candyman: Day Of The Dead is on the cover of my most recent Fangoria magazine. .... sigh....

Low budget hampers an otherwise great yarn.

An earnest take on H.P. Lovecraft's "The Strange Case Of Charles Dexter Ward". Unlike Stuart Gordon's 1986 'H.P. Lovecraft's Reanimator', this film goes directly for horror rather than humour. The resurrection/re-animation in this film is rooted in black magic tinged with pseudoscience. Sometimes the low budget impairs the inspiration of true terror, but what you get is a competently acted, well written (save for some melodramatic dialogue) and often actually creepy little movie.

Candyman (1992)
Sweets to the sweet !!
3 July 1999
A very rare, terrifying '90's horror treat. I will always remember the time I walked into a video store and saw some eighth-graders standing in front of a mirrored Candyman standee and daring each other to say his name 5 times to their reflections - none of them would actually do it. That is the kind of effect this urban folklore tale has on those who've seen it. ...And no - I've never been able to do it either...

It (1990)
"It" just doesn't cut it.
3 July 1999
It was decided that the 2 hours generally accepted in feature films was no where near long enough to tell this epic tale of ultimate terror, so it was born as a surprisingly creepy TV mini-series - at least it started out that way. Consisting of two episodes, It started out like a freight train for the first 100 minute part, then somehow lost all it's steam in the second. By the end of that first installment, you are riveted with fear and dread/anticipation for the conclusion, only to be let down by the limits of what can/can't be shown on TV... but maybe that's just me ; )

Girly (1970)
Creepy madness!!!
3 July 1999
Understated British psychodrama with no effects to speak of, just lots of creepy dialogue, tension and madness - not even any nudity and only implied sex, very little at that. Twisted little tale of a mad little "family" that will engross, humour, disgust and terrify you. Mmmm .... yummy.

Within the Rock (1996 TV Movie)
8/10
A good b-movie... similar plot to Deep Impact/Armageddon... done better though.
4 May 1999
A "renegade moon" called Galileo's Child is headed for Earth. A drilling team is sent to create tunnels to be used as propulsion channels for a nuclear detonation that is to divert the moon from its collision course. That in itself is a rough job, but add to that one very angry awakened-from-hibernation alien, and you get an entertaining film containing cool makeup effects and good character development. A good bet for a relaxing night of no-brainer cinema.

(sounds a little like two other recent movie plots huh? - this was done two years earlier and to better end than one of them - so who copied who?)

Actually a *scary* horror -- they dont make'em like this anymore!!
4 May 1999
Use of mood and characters propels this creepy tale into dizzying heights of terror... if you are sick of the new "trendy" horror a la I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, check this one out to see an old fashioned flick that is intended to *really* scare you... not just show off JLH's chest.. although there is some nudity in this one.

NOTE:// it is also worth mentioning that a few now famous guys and gals are in this one... Jeff Goldblum, Chris Sarandon and Beverly D'Angelo for starters
