The Great Gatsby (2000)
Brilliant Adaptation of a Brilliant Novel
I have anxiously been awaiting 'The Great Gatsby' for almost a year, and I was not disappointed. I first read Fitzgerald's novel in high school and, of course, watched the 1974 Robert Redford/Mia Farrow film. Toby Stephens' Jay Gatsby was understated and well-developed. Mira Sorvino had just the sort of dreamy, childlike quality I imagined when reading the novel. I cannot wait to watch it again.
10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
Wonderful Remake
I admit it, I really didn't think that I would like "10 Things I Hate About You", but I was pleasantly surprised. Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger have wonderful chemistry; Larry Miller is hilarious as the uptight father; and Larisa Oleynik sparkles as the vapid Bianca. The funniest part of the movie, though, is Daryl "Chill" Mitchell as Mr. Morgan. Read the Shakespeare play , see the Burton-Taylor classic, and then watch this film. It makes a nice triple play.
American Beauty (1999)
Absolute Beauty!
I could not wait to see this film. Once I saw it, I couldn't wait to see it again. Everything about this film is stunning, from the storyline to the cinematography. The music is hauntingly sweet. This story will make you stop and think about life.
Sliding Doors (1998)
Nobody expects such a lovely film!
I didn't know what to expect when I saw this movie. However, I was quite delighted with the wonderful way Peter Howitt showed 2 different views of Helen's life without confusing the audience. I especially loved the characters of James and Russell.
The Student Prince (1997)
Another winner for Robson Green
"The Prince of Hearts" is another winner for Robson Green, the charming British heartthrob/actor/singer. He once again shows his comedic talents (evident in "Reckless" and "Ain't Misbehavin'") as Barry, the Royal Protection Unit guard. As much as I like him in this, I have to admit that Rupert Penry-Jones really steals the show as the Prince with no name. He is at once sensitive and vulnerable yet aloof and distant. It's clear that he's a bit slow intellectually, but he makes up for that in his actions (at the end of the show). Tara Fitzgerald was charming as Grace Wilson, the American girl with whom Barry and the Prince both fall in love.
