When people’s dreams start to fall into place, their uncertainly about how to handle their new reality can often inhibit them from reaching their ultimate goal. That’s certainly the case for actor Mcabe Gregg’s protagonist of Brad Jaffe in the new comedy, ‘Teenage Badass.’ In the film, Brad joins a local band, in order to […]

SXSW picture Teenage Badass is now making its way to theatres across the US and to mark the occasion we spoke to the film’s director Grant McCord, alongside leading star Mcabe Gregg.
We spoke to the long-time friends and collaborators about the genesis of the project, which also stars the likes of Kevin Corrigan. They speak about their cinematic inspirations, the importance of having good music, and they tell us about their own experiences playing music. We also couldn’t let the opportunity pass us by, and we had to ask Gregg about his relationship with Stand By Me, given his father Bradley was such an integral role in the 80s classic. Meanwhile, as ask McCord about his own experiences on the sets of Hunger Games and Logan, and what he learnt and took with him, into this charming little indie production.

Teenage Badass is one of those films that seems tailor made for a very specific audience: thirtysomething men who fell in love with music during the Nineties and never did anything much more edgy than smoking a bit of cannabis and making deliberately unflattering fashion choices, but still like to think of themselves as badasses when they're dancing around in secret in the kitchen. If that sounds like you, you're likely to find this by-the-numbers story of the rise and fall of a small time rock band rather endearing. If not, it may provide you with a few laughs, but not much more.
Brad (Mcabe Gregg) is small time guy with a small time drug habit, living with his ailing mother and helping to define the slacker stereotype of the era. His one real passion is drumming, so when he's invited to join a local band, he leaps at the chance.

There’s an inherent problem with marketing a comedy film. It’s the same issue that haunts horror films. How much do you give away in the trailers? Often, trailers give away all the best jokes in the two minutes of footage used to entice folks to spend money to watch the film on the big screen. Clips are the way to go, as proven by our exclusive footage from the upcoming comedy “Teenage Badass,” which serves as a great tease for a hilarious film without giving away the best parts.

“This was going to a transformative event, and with the cancellation, the filmmakers were left stranded and scrambling.”
SXSW film head Janet Pierson said on Friday (13) that despite the cancellation of the physical festival, staff will ensure all of this year’s competition sections can be judged via screener links.
At time of writing Screen understands almost every filmmaker in every section including the 10 narrative feature and 10 documentary feature competition categories had opted into the plan. Only one filmmaker of a short had not opted in and at time of writing organisers were waiting to hear back from the teams behind two high school shorts.

Before Sundance gets underway, SXSW has unveiled the first wave of their film lineup. This year’s slate includes Judd Apatow’s Pete Davidson-led comedy The King of Staten Island, a new Spike Jonze-directed Beastie Boys documentary, an intriguing new film by Amy Seimetz, and more.
There’s also The Lovebirds, directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) and starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, whose comedic stylings coalesce astoundingly well in the first trailer. The duo play Leilani and Jibran, a couple who are accidentally embroiled in a murder mystery as a man claiming to be a cop commits murder with their car and leaves them with the evidence.
Ahead of a release on April 3, see the trailer below, followed by the SXSW 2020 lineup.
