2023 wasn't a good year for superhero movies, with the vast majority of them drawing negative reviews and poor box office returns. One of the most shocking flops, however, was The Marvels.
Captain Marvel made over $1 billion in 2019 and the follow-up saw Carol Danvers paired up with WandaVision's Monica Rambeau and Ms. Marvel's title character. Now, Deadline has crunched the numbers and revealed that The Marvels' $206.1 million global box office haul was worse than we realised.
According to the trade, when all is said and done, the movie made a net loss of $237 million. It's no wonder then that Disney CEO Bob Iger has said Marvel Studios will begin moving away from developing unnecessary sequels.
As for what the future holds in store for these characters, it's hard to say.
Monica will clearly be part of a future Multiversal story after landing in the same reality as the X-Men,...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has certainly seen better days. Just five years ago, each film was almost a guaranteed billion-dollar smash for Disney and Marvel Studios. Now, in an era where the entertainment industry has been oversaturated by steaming, people seem less and less interested in the franchise.
In the early days of Disney+, shows like Loki and The Falcon and The Winter Solder were must watch television. Now, shows like Secret Invasion, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Ms. Marvel are plummeting in viewership. Not to mention the recent box office failures of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels at the 2023 box office.
Not only has Marvel been losing it big in the once popular superhero genre, but Sony is also dropping with their Spider-Verse spin-off films like Morbius and Madame Web, and Warner Bros. Discovery with their DC Universe films like The Flash and Blue Beetle.

We have discussed killers that received slasher movies, folklore turned cannibalism, and plenty of possession via person, home, or even object. What we haven’t done too much of is the good old-fashioned cult. While we took a deep dive into Jim Jones and the tragedy of Jonestown paired with the very well-done Sacrament, there are a ton of real-life cults and cult leaders that have been put to celluloid in an attempt to both cash in and tell a compelling story. I mean, I’m writing this right now on the couch while my wife watches a documentary about a cult on Netflix. True crime and religious cult stuff exist in popular forms like podcasts, shows, and of course movies too. Today we will look at two things that don’t get a lot of widespread attention. The 2007 horror movie Borderland (watch it Here) and what it is loosely...

David Zaslav, since his appointment as the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, has not been the most popular guy around. With his cost-cutting decisions from shelving projects to cancelling others, there has been a lot of things that have fans reeling. And now, seems like they have one more thing to hate about the man.

James Gunn has advised Joe Manganiello to consider moving on from his role in the Dceu. The 47-year-old actor portrayed Slade Wilson, aka Deathstroke, in Zack Snyder’s DC Extended Universe, making brief appearances in both Justice League and The Snyder Cut. He was also slated to star in Ben Affleck’s canceled Batman film.
Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke in Justice League
Apart from that, there were talks of a potential standalone Deathstroke movie, for which Manganiello even had a screenplay prepared. Despite DC Comics’ interest in the screenplay, Gunn suggested he let go of any potential plans for the character.
James Gunn Convinced Joe Manganiello to Move On from Deathstroke
With James Gunn rebooting the DC Universe with Chapter One: Gods & Monsters, the possibility for Joe Manganiello to reprise his role as Deathstroke has been less. However, the actor still had hopes for introducing an origin story for the DC villain.

2023 may yet be remembered as the year the superhero movie died. Peyton Reed's "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" was released in February 2023 and was the first notable comic book-based bomb of the year. The film was notoriously re-jiggered throughout its production, with massive and expensive SFX being finalized up to the last minute. The official budget ballooned to $200 million, although separate reports have pegged the price tag as being closer to that of Disney's notorious box office misfire "John Carter" (which cost $263 million to make). "Quantumania" still grossed $464 million, but that's considered low for a Marvel movie.
Throughout 2023, more bombs dropped as superhero movies either lost money or were considered disappointments. "Shazam! Fury of the Gods," "The Flash," "Blue Beetle," "The Marvels," and "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" all tanked, and while many went to see "Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3," it felt like the last kick in a closing series.

Visual effects studio Digital Domain is introducing a new version of its Masquerade facial motion capture system, which eliminates the need for actors to wear tracking markers on their faces during production. Cto Hanno Basse tells Variety that the company is sharing the development with customers and “we’re probably going to do several projects this year” using the tech.
A bit of history: Earlier versions of Masquerade were used by Digital Domain to enable Josh Brolin to play Thanos in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame” and Tatiana Maslany to portray the titular “She Hulk.”
Basse believes that by eliminating the need to use tracking markers, Masquerade3 can save time and money while getting a more precise performance.
“It removes the need of getting the dots on people’s faces every day. So it saves time and money on set,” he says. “The other thing was, because the dots...

"The Simpsons" is arguably the best American TV show of all time, a long-running masterpiece of the medium that has forever changed TV and animation. Part of why the series has managed to remain popular after so many decades and even have a resurgence in quality recently is the show's characters and world. Springfield feels very much like a real, breathing place full of memorable individuals. Indeed, there are so many noteworthy personalities on the show that we once ranked the best one-off "Simpsons" characters and still had to ignore dozens of them. The series can even support episodes where the main cast is nowhere to be seen and they still end up being some of the best "Simpsons" episodes ever.

A trailer made by fans for a Batgirl movie with Jenna Ortega has got more than 1.03 million views in less than five days. It’s made by Kh Studio and uses different effects, sounds, AI, and movie stuff. But it’s just for fun and doesn’t mean Ortega is really doing anything with DC. Still, people might keep talking about Ortega joining DC because of how many people watched the trailer.
We’re not sure if there are any plans for Batgirl in Gunn’s Dcu, even though the trailer shows Dceu characters.
When James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as leaders of DC Studios last year, big changes were expected. Shortly after, the studio officially announced the end of the DC Extended Universe (Dceu) and introduced a new cinematic universe called Dcu, serving as a soft reboot. This shift resulted in the cancellation of planned sequels like...

A fan-made trailer for a Batgirl movie starring Jenna Ortega has gained over 1.03 million views in less than five days. Created by Kh Studio, the trailer uses various effects, sound design, AI technologies, and movie analytics. However, it’s purely for entertainment and doesn’t indicate any real projects involving Ortega and DC. Despite this, rumors about Ortega’s potential casting may continue due to the trailer’s popularity.
Even though the trailer features Dceu characters, it’s unknown whether something related to Batgirl is planned in Gunn’s Dcu.
When James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as CEOs of DC Studios last year, we knew nothing would be the same. Indeed, it didn’t take long for the studio to officially announce the end of the DC Extended Universe and the start of another cinematic universe, Dcu, that will replace it as a soft reboot. For a few years now, there’s been a noticeable decline in the quality of superhero movies, evident in both critical reception and box office performance. By 2023, superhero fatigue had reached its peak. Two out of three Marvel Studios releases had failed to impress, with ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ barely breaking even and ‘The Marvels’ becoming the lowest-grossing MCU movie to date.
The Dceu didn’t fare any better. The year kicked off with ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods,’ which flopped critically and financially, followed by ‘The Flash.’ However, expectations for ‘The Flash’ weren’t high, especially considering controversies surrounding its lead actor. ‘Blue Beetle’ also failed to make an impact despite its wholesome family story. Surprisingly, the year ended on a somewhat positive note with ‘Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom,’ which managed to be a relative success, earning $434.38 million at the box office.

After facing several disappointing releases, the Dceu underwent a significant overhaul, led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. They aim to soft-reboot the entire cinematic universe. Fans hoped that some actors and characters from the Dceu would carry over to the new Dcu, but only ‘Blue Beetle’ and ‘Peacemaker’ are confirmed for such transitions. Gunn has additional plans for these characters and actors. Currently, multiple projects are in development for the Dcu.
One of the divisive movies in the Dceu was ‘The Suicide Squad,’ which didn’t make the cut for further development. Daniela Melchior, who played Ratcatcher 2 in the film, addressed her potential return to Gunn’s Dcu in an interview with Nestor Cine. She expressed her interest in reprising her role as Ratcatcher 2 but also mentioned she’s open to exploring other characters.

Following several unsuccessful releases, Dceu as we knew it was abandoned with James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over the soft-rebooting of the entire cinematic universe. Fans held onto hope that in some of the franchises from Dceu, actors and characters would reprise their roles in the Dcu, sadly, the only projects currently planned to make the transitions are ‘Blue Beetle’ and ‘Peacemaker’ as Gunn has further plans for both actors and their respectable characters.
Several projects are currently in development as part of the Dcu.
One of the highly polarizing movies that was released as part of the Dceu was ‘The Suicide Squad,’ also one of the franchises that didn’t make the cut. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was the recent addition to one of the most beloved superhero series in recent times. Not only did it manage to maintain the hype of the first film, it also outdid it perfectly, not only setting up iconic characters for the next film but also telling an excellent story in a visually stunning manner.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Many would call the Spider-Verse series a perfect franchise and one of the biggest reasons for this is its directors and animators. While Marvel has won many hearts and box office records, the studio has rarely been the favorite of award shows such as the Oscars and Golden Globes. These awards are mostly reserved for films that go beyond genre tropes and have elements of arthouse. Marvel’s Black Panther is the only film that was nominated for Best Picture.
However, the prestigious Saturn Awards have constantly honored the franchise as they focus on sci-fi, horror, and fantasy genres. Marvel has dominated the Saturn Awards for Best Comic-to-Movie Film category, which is widely regarded as the ‘Oscars for Superheroes’. Ever since it was established in 2013, only one DC film has had the honor of receiving the award, and it is not Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel.

Harvey Guillen has hailed Disney for their efforts on inclusivity in animated movies. The 33-year-old actor voices the character of Gabo in the animated feature 'Wish' and thinks the studio is "making strides in the right direction" in terms of representation.Harvey – who identifies as queer – told ComicBook.com: "I think they're making strides in the right direction. I think it's hard to rebuild a wheel that's already been in motion for a while, and it's hard to think of a new direction, especially in where we're at with the world, but they're putting their best foot forward, I think. And sometimes those things take time, and I'm optimistic."Harvey also thinks that the "fantastic" prospect of a queer princess in a Disney film is a distinct possibility in the near future. The 'Blue Beetle' star said: "That'd be fantastic. After 14 wonderful seasons, fans of the hit TV show Blue Bloods are left stunned by the news that the beloved CBS police procedural drama show is coming to an end after more than a decade of broadcasting. According to the report, the 14th season, which stars Tom Selleck, Donnie Wahlberg, Will Estes, Bridget Moynahan, and Vanessa Ray, will be divided into two installments with a total of 18 episodes.

Monsterverse vs Dceu
Since debuting in 2013, the DC Extended Universe has been one disaster after another for Warner Brothers. Massive critical and fan backlash, constant shake-ups in creative direction, and increasingly dwindling box office plagued the once promising franchise before it was finally put out of its misery by The Flash; though Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom might still be canon depending on who you ask.
Yet at the same time, WB has helped spearhead another cinematic universe that might be the only one besides Marvel to work out in the long run. The Monsterverse: a series of films and TV shows adapting beloved Japanese kaiju such as Godzilla, alongside original monsters and American icon King Kong for good measure.

Jason Momoa is back making headlines with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The actor has added yet another water-related movie to his filmography. Having kickstarted his career with the portrayal of Jason Ioane in the syndicated series: Baywatch: Hawaii, he has now starred in some great movies and shows like Baywatch and Game of Thrones.
Jason Momoa was rumored to be playing the role of the DC superhero Arthur Curry/Aquaman in June 2014. He did not make his first appearance as the character until 2016 when he made a cameo in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. And he might have returned as the character for the last time in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and the movie’s box office collection is not half as bad as some people might have assumed.

All eyes of comic book movie fans are on James Gunn as he takes up the task of rebooting the whole DC film universe. Regardless of the perception of Gunn by the devoted DC followers, the filmmaker has a habit of engaging with fans directly on social media. He has a tendency to answer questions, dispel rumors, gauge public opinion, get involved with debates and just be as transparent as he can. Part of the fun for Gunn has also been teasing the little nuggets of information that he’ll drop here and there about the projects he’s working on. Now that he’s especially under the microscope with his Superman: Legacy film, people online pick up on what information can be given for this anchor entry into the new universe.
Gunn also has to walk a fine line with speculation being made with every new post he makes.

One of the most anticipated sequels of the year is "Joker: Folie a Deux," aka "Joker 2." It reunites director Todd Phillips with star Joaquin Phoenix, who will once again reprise his role as the Clown Prince of Crime. This follow-up is getting a major boost of star power as Lady Gaga joins the cast as Harley Quinn. But that star power -- and presumably some production value -- comes at a steep cost. We've learned that the sequel's budget is in the $200 million range, a shockingly steep increase given that the original "Joker" cost less than $60 million.
According to Variety, the budget for "Folie a Deux" has ballooned to "about" $200 million. That includes a whopping $20 million payday for Phoenix and a $12 million check for Gaga, who previously starred in "A Star Is Born." While the figure was not cited in this report, Phillips is also expected to be earning...

Sony Pictures needs to head back to the drawing board with its Marvel universe because "Madame Web" crashed and burned in every way imaginable over the weekend. The studio's latest "Spider-Man" franchise spin-off film hit theaters on Valentine's Day against "Bob Marley: One Love." Conventional wisdom would tell you that the superhero movie would easily beat the middle-of-the-road music biopic. That's not what happened and, frankly, it wasn't even close.
"Madame Web" pulled in just $26.2 million across its first six days of release, counting from Wednesday through the Monday President's Day holiday. It made just $15.3 million over the weekend, coming in second to "One Love." The biopic pulled in a surprisingly large $28.6 million over the weekend and $52 million over its first six days, including a record-breaking opening day in Jamaica. Four years of writing about domestic box office during “a challenging period” makes it tempting to go with the glass half-full view (and even more). This weekend, Paramount’s “Bob Marley: One Love” provides the necessary evidence with an estimated $49 million gross by Monday, six days into its Valentine’s Day opening run. Its three-day total is about $27.7 million.
That’s a terrific performance against a $70 million production cost, and it’s an original biopic. Despite a depressed marketplace, there’s an audience for mainstream movies that can make a profit. “Bob Marley” showed a strong cross-demographic draw, female slightly ahead of male, among all ages and ethnic groups. Reviews were not good (43 Metacritic), but it has an A Cinemascore and two weeks with little competition. It could become the first domestic $100-million grossing film of 2024.
There’s also compelling evidence for a glass half empty (or worse). The estimate...

It’s hard to explain exactly what inspired this list. Maybe we just wanted to rave some more about Pixar. Maybe watching Avatar again and the new sequel Avatar: The Way of Water boggled our minds. Whatever it was, it’s done, and we can’t take it back (the delete key is broken). It is kind of strange that there are so many blue movie characters. The box office is in desperate need of saving right now. January relied almost entirely on holdovers from 2023 like "Wonka" and "Anyone But You" to help get theaters by, with only a few new movies such as "Mean Girls" and "The Beekeeper" to liven up the joint. Unfortunately, films like "I.S.S." failed to connect with the general public. So, can the next Marvel superhero adventure be the hero we need right now? Maybe not. Sony's "Madame Web" is due to hit theaters on Valentine's Day and, while these comic book adaptations were money in the bank for well over a decade in Hollywood, times have changed. This, it appears, is going to play more like "Morbius" and less like "Venom."

The DC Extended Universe is dead.
Starting in 2008, several feature films based on Marvel Comics proved to be big hits, and Marvel Studios (in conjunction with Disney) would go on to rewrite the blockbuster landscape. For 15 straight years, Marvel dominated the box office by taking a serialized TV structure and applying it to movies, hence birthing the "Cinematic Universe." Each film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was directly connected to all the others. In the "season finale episodes," characters would team up. The MCU never told very sophisticated stories — they all boiled down to "good guys" and "bad guys" engaging in pugilism — but they captured the public's attention like no film series had before.
Naturally, Warner Bros. tried to imitate the McU's success by launching the Dceu in 2013. After all, Warner Bros. still owned the film rights to an enormous back catalogue of superhero characters, including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman,...

With Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom came the end of the Dceu, otherwise known as the Snyderverse. And while some celebrate its demise, there are also many who mourn the loss of their heroes. But before we turn the page completely, let’s take a look back and rank the entire DC Extended Universe. I’m sure this won’t be controversial at all.
17. Suicide Squad
It doesn’t seem likely that we’ll ever get the fabled Ayer Cut of this film, but the one we received was rough. Filled with enough licensed music that it feels like a music video, Suicide Squad does everything wrong. From characters being introduced multiple times to the worst iteration of the Joker ever put to film, everything about this one is just a mess. If you love plots that don’t make sense and bad CGI, then this one is for you.

'El Muerto' is reportedly back in development without Bad Bunny.Sony is said to have quietly resumed work on the upcoming comic book blockbuster - which follows the story of a superman luchador - but the musician and occasional WWE superstar won't be playing the masked wrestling hero.As reported by Variety, script revisions and Bad Bunny's tour dates mean the movie is in development without its former leading man. There had been delays due to the writers and actors strikes in Hollywood, which meant the film lost its place in the release calendar.Last year, Bunny - whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio - was asked about the status of the film, and described the situation as "delicate" to Vanity Fair.He added: "I don't know what to say."A publicist later told the outlet he was no longer on board with the project.

Worldwide Box Office: MCU vs Dceu (Picture Credit: IMDb)
Two of the biggest superhero universes, MCU and Dceu, have always found themselves in a pool of comparisons, and even fans of these respective universes are often at loggerheads on social media. At present, the situation on both sides isn’t that good as films have failed to match the expectations. So, let’s look at the worldwide box office of the last 5 films from each universe!
MCU’s current status
Talking about the current situation, MCU isn’t enjoying the best of its run as films aren’t living up to their expectations. O. Scott announced he would resign from his post as film critic at the New York Times, leaving his readers to wrestle with some cataclysmic prophecies. “The current apocalypse,” he wrote on his way out,… is that streaming and Covid anxiety are conspiring to kill off moviegoing as we have known it, leaving a handful of I.P.-driven blockbusters and horror movies to keep theaters in business while we mostly sit at home bingeing docuseries, dystopias and the occasional art-film guilt trip. Am I worried? Of course I’m worried. The cultural space in which the movies I care most about have flourished seems to be shrinking. The audience necessary to sustain original...

Costume designers are stepping up their decades-long fight for pay equity and gender equity.
On Thursday, Hollywood costume designers launched Pay Equity Now, a movement designed to spotlight longstanding pay discrepancies. Year 2023 will be remembered in Hollywood for various phenomena — the strikes, Barbenheimer — but for Latinos, 2023 was the year that saw a relatively significant number of movies and TV releases from and about their community, in a variety of genres. With actors and writers spending about half of last year unable to promote their projects, the atmosphere at Neuehouse in Hollywood was all the more electric last Friday evening as a who’s who of Latin entertainment, media, sports and politics came together to toast the excellence they saw on the big and small screens.
The event, La Cena Los Angeles, was an expansion of the intimate multi-city La Cena dinner series started last year by culture and impact consultant Ruben Garcia, formerly co-head of cultural business strategy at CAA, to cultivate community among impactful Latino figures across disciplines.
