More than a week since CBS shocked the entertainment industry with news that it is currently developing the first daytime drama series since the launch of “Passions” nearly 25 years ago, and the network’s first new soap opera since the launch of “The Bold and the Beautiful” in 1987, George Cheeks, president and CEO of CBS and chief content officer for news and sports at Paramount+, recently revealed how “The Gates” came to be and gave some insight on whether the show will be a 30-minute show or one-hour.
In a far-reaching interview with Vulture, Cheeks revealed that “The Gates” is real and that the show is being developed following conversations with Sheila Ducksworth, president of the CBS/NAACP Production Venture, which was established in 2020 to develop content for the CBS Television Network, as well as the ability to sell programming to third-party platforms across the media landscape with an emphasis...

Director Zack Snyder left the DC Universe and has formed a pretty solid relationship with Netflix. Following the success of his zombie movie "Army of the Dead," the filmmaker moved on to an even more ambitious project in the form of an original sci-fi epic "Rebel Moon." We say "epic" because it is going to be split into two movies and, though technically an "original" idea, it was initially conceived as a potential "Star Wars" film. In any event, not only are we getting a part one and part two from Snyder, but each installment will be getting an R-rated cut as well.
I recently had the chance to speak with "John Wick: Chapter 4" re-recording mixer Andy Koyama, as well as other members of the sound team in honor of the film's release. Koyama also happens to be working on "Rebel Moon," and I asked him how that process is coming along.

Will Packer has been named Producer of the 94th Annual Academy Awards, set for March 27.
This will be the first Oscar show to be produced by Packer, a prolific producer of numerous films and TV projects including Straight Outta Compton, Ride Along, Girls Trip, the Think Like a Man films and the television remake of Roots, for which he received an Emmy nomination. But his credits do not include a lot of live TV projects, so taking on the Oscars will be a relatively new experience. His wide-ranging credits in comedy give hope that he also will be creating a fun Academy Awards.
The Academy clearly is looking for fresh ideas and new directions after the pandemic-affected, critically derided and record-low-rated 2021 telecast produced by the trio of Steven Soderbergh, Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins. Of course the ratings collapse of that show, which was delayed to April 25, was not entirely...

Will Packer will produce the 94th Oscars. He takes the reins of the show at a time when the broadcast and those of other awards shows are struggling to remain relevant. Last year’s telecast, which took place in the shadow of the Covid pandemic and at a time when the global box office was a shadow of itself, drew 9.23 million viewers, a 51% drop from the 18.69 million who tuned into the program in 2020. It represented a new low in viewership.
Packer has shown a deft touch identifying and producing projects that are broadly commercial. His credits include “Girls Trip,” “Straight Outta Compton,” and “Ride Along.” His television work includes “That Girl Lay Lay,” “Blackballed,” “Ambitions,” “Bigger,” “Being Mary Jane,” “Uncle Buck” and the remake of “Roots,” for which he received an Emmy nomination. “It’s rare that the interiority of black men is depicted on screen,” said Academy Award-winner Tarell Alvin McCraney. That theme permeated the Oscar-winning “Moonlight” and it’s at the center of McCraney’s new Own series, “David Makes Man.” The hour-long drama centers on a 14-year-old prodigy (Akili McDowell) from the projects who is haunted by the death of his closest friend as his hard-working mother looks to him to find a way out of poverty. In choosing between the streets that raised him, or the higher education that may offer a way out, the interior struggle gives the series its soul.
It’s a series in which David’s interior life is generously examined, and sumptuously illustrated, bringing to life the dreams and disappointments of young black men from poor and working-class backgrounds who live in a constant state of uncertainty and anxiety. “A black man enters any...

With no disrespect to Benjamin Franklin, there are actually three certainties in life: death, taxes and the Sunday publication of Quotes of the Week.
As fall TV inches closer, we’ve compiled another seven days’ worth of the summer’s best bon mots, zingers and one-liners. This time around, we’ve got a hypothetical time-travel scenario on Four Weddings and a Funeral, an optimistic sting operation on Blood & Treasure, the arrival of a new Orange County housewife and a pop culture mix-up on Orange Is the New Black.

Tiffany Haddish has canceled her upcoming stand-up show in Atlanta to protest Georgia’s new abortion law. The Girls Trip star was originally scheduled to perform at the Fox Theatre on June 22nd, but said she wouldn’t do her show in Georgia unless the heartbeat bill is rescinded.
“After much deliberation, I am postponing my upcoming show in Atlanta. I love the state of Georgia, but I need to stand with women and until they withdraw Measure HB481, I cannot in good faith perform there,” she said in a statement to ticketholders.

On Tuesday, after weeks of suspense-less delay, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed a six week abortion ban into law as he’d long promised. The bill, slated to go into effect in January 2020, includes an incendiary provision declaring “unborn children are a class of living, distinct person.” The impact of those words, as laid out by Mark Joseph Stern at Slate, is far-reaching: it would effectively criminalize — with penalties including life in prison and death — any woman who seeks an abortion or even one who miscarries in the state. That’s a staggering thought,...
