Ian Gelder, the British actor who played Kevan Lannister on HBO’s Game of Thrones and the villain Zellin on Doctor Who, has died. He was 74.
“It is with huge huge sadness and a heavy heart broken into a million pieces that I’m leaving this post to announce the passing of my darling husband and life partner Ian Gelder,” the actor Ben Daniels announced on Instagram. Daniels revealed that Gelder had been diagnosed with bile duct cancer five months ago and that “neither of us had any idea that it would all be so fast.”
“He was my absolute rock and we’d been partners for more than 30 years. If we weren’t together we spoke to each other everyday,” Daniels wrote. “He was the kindest, most generous spirited and loving human being. He was a wonderful wonderful actor, and everyone who worked with him was touched by his heart and light.

Stellar Blade is the latest PlayStation 5 exclusive that will be launching on this platform very soon. And there’s no doubt about the fact that fans are pretty hyped for this exciting new hack-and-slash action game. There are a number of reasons why this game is so popular. It’s visuals, its combat, and much more. But one thing that no gamer is able to look over is this game’s protagonist, Eve.
The developers have given her an interesting look. She looks pretty good, and her looks seem to have attracted more than a few eyeballs. Some have even started suggesting that this game is intentionally given such a protagonist to attract more people towards it. Others do not believe so, but the recently released demo for this title seems to have proven otherwise.

From eighth billing to bankable leading lady, Immaculate director Michael Mohan has played a key role in Sydney Sweeney’s rise to superstar status.
In 2017, Mohan helped cast Sweeney in the ‘90s coming-of-age series, Everything Sucks!, and while she was only billed eighth in the closing credits, her character played an integral part in the show’s central coming-out story. Mohan was certainly impressed by the Washington native’s acting ability, but it was her extracurricular efforts that indicated she was bound for great things, as she spent her downtime learning the ins and outs of production. Unfortunately, in April 2018, despite a passionate fanbase, Everything Sucks! became one of Netflix’s first of many more heartbreaking cancellations. However, within a matter of months, it opened the door for Sweeney to join the cast of HBO’s eventual hit, Euphoria.

Hello, and welcome to the Scene to Seen Podcast. I am Valerie Complex Associate editor and film writer at Deadline.
Today, we’re talking to directors Jesse Short Bull, and Laura Tomaselli about their new film Lakota Nation vs. The United States. Mark Ruffalo and Marisa Tomei serve as executive producers, while Benjamin Hedin and Phil Pinto serve as producers.
It is the most sacred place on earth, the birthplace of the Lakota that has shaped thought, identity and philosophy for the Očéti Šakówiŋ since time immemorial–the life-giving land known as the Black Hills. Riz Ahmed is going to be Hamlet. The "Nightcrawler" star will portray the prince of Denmark in a forthcoming adaption of "Hamlet" that will also star Morfydd Clark as Ophelia and "Conversations With Friends" star (and Taylor Swift's beau) Joe Alwyn as Laertes, Ophelia's brother.
A release date has not been set yet, but Aneil Karia has been confirmed as the director, and the script will be written by Michael Lesslie, who also wrote 2015's "Macbeth" and met Ahmed in university. Lesslie and Ahmed have been conceptualizing the project for at least 10 years, Ahmed told Deadline. It will follow the same plot as Shakespeare's classic tragedy, with Ahmed's Hamlet haunted by the ghost of his dead father, only it will be based in present-day London.

Riz Ahmed and Aneil Karia are teaming again for a modern, London-set British Indian adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.”

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
With Daniel Craig’s reign as James Bond coming to an end with “No Time to Die,” this may be the perfect moment to give the franchise an overhaul. Perhaps the next James Bond could be female, Black or queer? “If they want to continue with this character and the franchise, I think you can explode it and do anything,” Ben Whishaw, who plays Q for the third time in the latest installment, tells me on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “I don’t know what that should be, but it seems to me like it should be something quite radical, something really different. It’s got to change; it’s got to keep changing. We’re in different times now.” He knows that won’t be an easy task. “There will always be people who want...

When “Surge” debuted at Sundance in January (a full nine months before its release) the Ben Whishaw-starring thriller seemed like a surefire success—a modern-day “Taxi Driver” or realistic “Joker.” But this week, the film has been dumped on VOD with a little advertisement, promotion, or reviews. With such an appealing star, genre, and set-up, how can this be?

One of the films that premiered nearly 1.5 years ago at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival that I’m surprised still hasn’t found U.S. distribution is the Ben Whishaw-led thriller Surge. Earning some perhaps superfluous comparisons to Joker considering the timing, the film follows a London man whose mind unravels and goes on a crime spree over the course of a day. Marking Aneil Karia’s directorial debut, the first trailer has now arrived as it lands in U.K. cinemas.
Matt Cipolla said in his Sundance review, “Set over 24 hours, Anei Karia’s Surge takes a cracked mind and lets it spill out and, be it through self-discovery or self-destruction, finds the humor in life’s absurdism. Part character study and part thriller, it plays something like a cross between Antonio Campos and the Safdie brothers. It isn’t quite as successful as such a description would imply,...

"The police are looking for you." Opening this week in cinemas in the UK is this week is this intense British thriller titled Surge, set in London following a man who begins to fall apart over 24 hours. This premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival last year and was instantly compared to Joker, but it doesn't really have that kind of vibe. Surge "is a stripped back thriller about a man who goes on a bold and reckless journey of self-liberation." Ben Whishaw stars, with Ellie Haddington and Jasmine Jobson. It's an eerie, slow burn film that builds to a boil and tries to make a point, but overall feels muddled in its attempts to make that point. But it is uncomfortable filmmaking and tries be honest so I respect that it gives us something more than just another expected story. This trailer came out months ago but we just caught up with it now.

Vertigo Releasing has launched a new trailer for Aneil Karia debut feature ‘Surge’ starring Ben Whishaw.
Joseph (Whishaw) is trapped in a soulless job, living a life devoid of emotion and meaning. After an impulsive act of rebellion, Joseph unleashes a wilder version of himself. He is propelled on a reckless journey through London, ultimately experiencing what it feels like to be alive.

Showtime has secured the right to Surge, a documentary that will play on the premium cabler’s newly established a co-branded multiplex channel SHOxBET on September 8. Co-directed by Hannah Rosenzweig and Wendy Sachs, the film details the historic 2018 midterm elections where a record number of first-time female candidates ran and won. From executive producers Alyssa Milano, Regina K. Scully, Dara, Jedd Canty, and Tanya Selvarantnam as well as advisor Katie Couric, the film sets to expose the double standards, biases and brutal realities women face running for Congress, some without the support of their own party. The doc centers on three congressional candidates in Texas, Indiana, and Illinois, who were each looking to flip their deep red districts to blue, including Lauren Underwood, the youngest Black woman ever to be elected to Congress. A registered nurse and public health expert, Underwood is now on the frontlines of the Covid-19 pandemic...

As Joseph (Ben Whishaw) sits at the table with his parents (Ellie Haddington and Ian Gelder), he puts his mouth to a glass. He wraps his lips around the rim as his breathing starts to heave. The others continue eating; he starts to lock his jaw. Then the glass cracks. He’s done this before a lot but never like this, and when he finds himself spitting blood into the bathroom sink with his mom screaming on the other side of the door, it seems that his tics have finally caught up with him.
That’s not to say he’s ever been a lax guy, but, to put it lightly, some things are getting to him. There are too many people, not enough manners. It’s too loud outside his apartment, too quiet inside his own head. It seems that only his job as an airport checkpoint officer grants...

There’s mannered, there’s manic, and then there’s the malfunctioning pinball-machine delirium that Ben Whishaw brings to “Surge”: a blinking, buzzing, flashing clatter of hyper-accelerated impulses, chicken-fried synapses and staggered hypnic jerks that never culminate in sleep. You wouldn’t expect stillness from a film called “Surge,” and in that respect only does Whishaw zig where you expect him to zig — to say nothing of his character, a humdrum airport worker who one day snaps in spectacularly feral fashion, embarking on the unlikeliest of London crime sprees. It’s quite a performance, sure to exhilarate some and aggravate others, and it joins the dots of Aneil Karia’s stylish if somewhat overstimulated debut feature while adding several disconnected ones of its own.

Debuting in Park City this year are Mamma Mia! director Phyllida Lloyd’s Herself, Remi Weekes’ debut His House, Sean Durkin’s Jude Law-starrer The Nest, Eliza Hittman’s abortion drama Never Rarely Sometimes Always and Aneil Karia debut Surge starring Ben Whishaw. Each project was developed from an early stage by BBC Films, which also backed production. Weekes’ Midnight thriller His House is already making waves after Netflix snapped up global rights yesterday.
In a wide-ranging interview, we spoke to the revamped BBC Films team, led by former Film4 executive Rose Garnett since 2017, about Sundance, BBC Films’ direction, the growing challenge posed by streamers and the #Baftasowhite furore.
