On the Ground
Hitchcoc8 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I guess no one else wants to write anything. The crew is able to land with a few cinematic tricks along the way. The stereotypical dream sequence--again. The Chinese collective business and betrayal of all the work that Lu did for so little in return. A really silly, smug ending. I'm wondering if this series is going to continue with the gang on Mars, building a new society. I just felt that it was really weak in what had the potential to be something very niice.

Character driven, beautiful art, touching and inspiring moments
advance51224 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Yeah, this show would be better without Lex, Isaac and most of Matt. Poor Mel, stuck with those three. Yeah, at times it is mind numbingly banal, especially Emma's parts. Swank is a fine actress, but her Earth relationships are shallow and uninteresting. Slogging ahead.. But this episode was worth the suffering, even that of the middle of the season.

Kwesi and Ram are vibrant and fun, and I love scenes with them. But the show is kept alive mostly by Lu and Misha, beautiful characters that start off as rough and hostile, but go through a wonderful transformation, or perhaps uncovering or discovering, and end up as having the most profound, most heartwarming scenes together. Their last dialog, last scene together was so joyfully touching and vulnerable, I just cried sad and happy tears at the same time. Two amazing actors, we are lucky to witness their interaction.

The art and cinematography of this episode were great. I felt such relief when they landed, and such joy seeing the Martian grovel, the red mountains, the moons.. it really felt as a preview to what we will all feel in 15-20 years. Inspiring and incredible.

Great final episode, I loved 85% of it deeply, 15% you can just skip ahead of without any regret.

"The Only Thing That Matters Is The People You Love'
wandernn1-81-6832746 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
So more flashbacks here of Matt and Emma at HOME, DURING a happier time. This is part of Matt dreaming. And Lex, she wakes up Isaac who stayed overnight in her room. LOL... and Isaac is tooling around like there's not a care in the World. Isaac the Junior in High School, nonchalant about the possibility of being caught in the House with the DAD of a freshman in high school at home. Yeah THAT'S realistic.....

-1 Star for that nonsense.....

And there are 1000 news people standing outside the House also . The same House were Isaac supposedly just sneaked out of??? Without being seen I'm sure.

Really that stupidity is distracting me from paying attention to the rest of this episode.

Ram really just cracks a joke about the solar panels malfunctioning??? Who writes this crap??? Now Ram apologizes for the backstabbing of his commander with regard to the LU uprising??? A bit late.

And they get a message from Ground. Chinese authority wants Lu to keep her reflective visor down when the group picture is taken when they walk on MARS. LOL... Chinese viewers really must love this one.

And Kwesi, tells Ram that in some capacity, Emma loves Ram. Hahahahaha, well that's refreshing.

And of course Misha has the best quote in the whole show. 'The Only Thing That Matters Is The People You Love.'

+1 Star for Misha

Emma and Ram have one more conversation. Ram tells Emma that if they die...their deaths are not Emma's burden to carry. And Kwesi offers a prayer.

AS the ship begins it's descent into the Mars atmosphere, communications from the crew are just being received on Earth. OMG THEN THEY ARE LANDING!!! DO THEY MAKE IT?????? Well of course they DO!!! LOL...what did you expect????

Oh ATLAS...thats the name of their ship / mission. Took me all of 10 episodes to pick up on that!!!

+1 Star for me finally picking up on the ship name.

Omg so emotional!!! They are all crying!!! And then they step out onto the surface of MARS!!! AND IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL!!!

And in Mission Control, they get the meesage that they have landed. And all 5 astronauts in the image sent back. All faces recognizable!!!! Take that ! LOL

And that's how we end this season. Successful landing on MARS. 15 year old daughter having 17 year old boy over for sleepovers! Dad stuck in a wheelchair recovering from stroke, but he did get his job back! And Chinese Representative at Mission Control VERY UPSET!

+1 Star for the ending to the season. :)

It's not just about crying in space
aslisonceley8 September 2020
"Away" imagines how female leadership would allow for healthy processing of emotions, as opposed to a pathological suppression of them, a worn-out stereotype of the male driven frontier story.

The show immediately breaks down genre norms in moments of tension, resolution of conflict through non-violence, emotional maturity, transparency and open conversation. More lifelike, a better way for new generations to watch a sci-fi and aspire to become like these new heroes that tap better into their female energy.

Poor Writing Choices
mstaggs8510 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The episode, like much of the rest of the series, was just all right. Pretty formulaic, not really any surprises. Starts with a scene of things going wrong on the landing, and of course, turns out to be a bad dream.

My main beef with this episode is the inability of the writers to handle tension properly.

Warning: spoilers (though the episode was predictable enough that it really shouldn't be)

The crew lands successfully. This was a given. They land, get out, stand in awe of the Martian landscape that surrounds them. Emma sends back the message that they have landed safely.

Then they cut to the control room, where the entire building waits in silence for news of the outcome of the landing. Everyone is tense, afraid to breathe. The scene is thick with tension. Except, it isn't. We just watched them land Lux was fully seconds earlier.

It drives me insane that the writers couldn't figure out to put THAT scene, people waiting silent and nervous for the signal their loved ones are alive, BEFORE we know they landed safely. THEN show the actual landing. We have to see the actual landing anyways, but the mission control scene serves no purpose.

Lazy writing, as has been characteristic of this series.

10 Episodes of Nothing
foxwingengel27 October 2020
Can definitely see why Netflix took this series off of life support. There's roughly 45 minutes of solid content across the 10 episodes. If you want to watch grown-ass people do nothing but cry 99% of the time, this series is for you. But if you're searching for a decent space adventure series, look elsewhere. This isn't even close.
