Good episode if you are into interpersonal drama
imdb-174839 September 2020
Man, people are harsh lol. Yea, if you are watching the show for space action, this episode is a dud. I thought it was pretty touching though. Not everything has to be fast paced action.

I am a little sad that we likely won't be seeing much of Nadia Hatta anymore. Quite a beauty.

Character connection makes for a great episode!
NJBart16 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was absolutely worth the watch. Yes there is drama, yes there is space - it's a drama in space! And it is fantastic. There are some really amazing moments in this episode and they should not be overlooked for their lack of space action.

The biggest thing I took away from this episode is that I find the connections between the characters very genuine. Matt and Emma have a very real relationship (besides the whole two astronauts thing). Their daughter and the struggles she is having coping with her parents being either in the hospital or in space, very genuine and really heartbreaking. Mei and Lu? Amazing. A lesbian secret lovers plot could easily become a trope and stereotypical, but I found this one extremely well done. No gratuitous sex scene, no kiss even - but the connection between the characters while they were on the phone was really breath taking.

Yes there were stereotypical moments and cliches. The "I don't need you to fix this I need you to be my wife" thing, a little overdone. The constant drama and unrealistic space problems are sometimes distracting, but think about this in comparison to a doctor drama. Everything the actors do in doctor shows is also over dramatic and also very fake feeling. I really think this story is more sophisticated and interesting!

Poetic
scribbler312 January 2021
As another (very small-minded) reviewer points out, no, there is not a lot of action in this episode. But think about it: They are on a 3-year mission. This is a marathon, not a sprint. And this episode is a kind of pause in the action, as the characters start to come to terms with the length of the journey, and the distance from their loved ones. The love story another reviewer dismisses deepens our understanding of this diverse and complicated crew. It takes great confidence as a writer/producer/director to slow down the action and devote an episode to almost pure character development. Some viewers might be impatient with this episode. It made me love this series all the more.

Outstanding!
freshorange14 May 2021
This series is amazing! The characters are shown very nuanced and with each subsequent episode they are developed more and more precisely, lovingly and almost poetically. The actors are excellent and give deep insights into the personalities they portray with all their strengths and weaknesses. It is an outstanding series that for the average Netflix user is most likely too little action-packed and focused too much on the characters and their inner conflicts. But that's exactly what makes AWAY so incredibly strong and powerful. To depict the soft tones, the nuances. An Outstanding series!

Someone please stop them!
Jecht_Sin10 September 2020
This is ridiculous. They have been three weeks in space, moving toward Mars, and they chat at the phone as if they were face to face. Can anyone please inform the writers that IT SIMPLY ISN'T POSSIBLE?? Each vocal message would have a lag of seconds, more than 3.3s for each million kilometres! Still, no matter the science the commander of the first mission to Mars chats with the family as if she was at the store buying grocery.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. All bringing their personal drama in a mission of 5 isolated people lasting three years. People that almost hated each other even before launching. Sure at the space agencies they know better about how to pick their astronauts. Not so Netflix with their writers. Bah!

Cheesy soap drama indeed
marybbloom6 September 2020
That was really too much. Supposed to be a series about astronauts and journey to Mars and all you see is video chatting with family and cheesy drama. Disappointing big time. I will try one more chapter and if it goes on like this we quit. .

Until Then.......
wandernn1-81-6832745 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Start with Matt working on his physical therapy with his legs / movement in his hospital room, coached by Lex.

THIS Episode is more of a background story on Lu. The Chinese astronaut. Her forbidden relationship with Mei, an operations person at mission control. And more Rehab for Matt as Lex returns to school for the first time since Matt's stroke.

Just background and story....not very much relevant to the actual mission happens here.

But Matt finds out that he may never walk again. And he tells Emma.

And more talking between Lu and Mei....and that's how this ends.

Really a boring episode as far as plot advancement. But for character development it was good for those 2 storylines.

Not Worth the Effort
Hitchcoc8 September 2020
I have no problem with shows about human relationships, gay or straight, but if this were a conventional drama it would bore one to death. I almost never give a two star review of anything. Cheap drama is cheap drama and the fact that this was presented as science fiction amazes me. I would like to ask the folks at NASA if they would install phone booths in their spacecraft. The fact that the lead is able to call her daughter at school at will and vice versa. One would think there would be all sorts of scientific experimentation going on, but instead this silly thing plays out. I think those fifties space ship movies would outdo this. I will watch one more episode, hoping there is some direction. I already know the guy is going to walk out of the hospital (no I haven't looked ahead)!

Ok, and now we're back at some tokenism... Warning: Spoilers
First it's starting to get ridiculous. How is it possible to call from that distance. There is no explanation? Have Nasa put you lots of communications satellites all over our solarsystem? When they were closer to earth I didn't have a problem, because of tech at that time could have done that possible. But not that far out.

And of course the token gay couple. The members are diverse ofcourse with the token female commander. If course Nasa it's led by a woman. Of course men don't really lead anymore, but they're not strong. The token male chauvinist sure he is just sad and lonely.

I wish this things wasn't in the does because of the story because it's not.
