Starts Well; However...
Easygoer104 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Edward Zwick directs the first episode (only), which is a very good thing. We are shown an international crew of 5: American "Emma Green" (Hilary Swank), the Mission Commander; Chinese "Lu" (Vivian Wu), the Chemist; Russian "Misha" (Mark Ivanir) who has logged time in space than anyone; Indian "Ram" (Ray Panthaki), the pilot and Great Britain "Kwesi"(Ato Essandoh) the botanist who has never been in space (from a small African country). Next we are shown an emergency situation (a fire) in which Emma attempts to resolve by immediately rushing in, saving Kwesi in the process. However, she exacerbates the situation for all because of a mistake which involves chemicals creating an accelerant (making the fire worse). Fortunately, the fire is almost immediately put out by Lu and Misha. The writer uses this as grounds for animosity and mistrust between crew members. Namely, Lu and Misha against the Emma. Normally, this is good for a plot: Have people at odds with each other. Unfortunately, it becomes gratuitous when the facts are obviously exploited. This weakens the plot. Emma meant well, rushing in and saving a crewman in the process. However, she made a mistake which caused the fire to be worse. This is where the writer made a large error: Misha and Lu repeatedly (and wrongly) say of Emma "She froze" when she obviously didn't. Regardless, I'll see how this plays out. If a terrific director like Zwick can't save the plot, who knows how the show will go with less experienced directors? Hopefully, the writers are better in future episodes.

'Go You f#$^#r, Go.'
wandernn1-81-6832745 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Alright! So here we go! A made for Netflix series in Space! I am a big fan of their current show Lost in Space so really looking forward to watching this one!!

We open here with Hillary Swank, name in this Emma Green. in a multi national crew of 5 prepping for a mission to Mars. Her husband Matt played by Josh Charles, another great actor from The Good Wife, who will also be involved in the mission but at mission control.

In this one, there is already an established base on the Moon. And the Mars mission will go first from Earth to Moon and then Moon to Mars.

Emma tells her daughter, that there's always a chance she doesn't come back. The mission plan is only 3 years . Star Trek was 5 years right? So Star Trek was more ambitious!

So apparently there wsa some glitch during the mission. A leak that almost started a fire that apparently could have killed everyone on the craft. And the different astronauts tell varied stories that implicate Emma as being non responsive. Matt back at home tho he seems to be taking the worst of it. He passes out at home the night before mission is supposed to launch from the Moon. Oh dear apparently Matt had a stroke!! He' s in the ICU. This is a bad pre mission event!! Emma is connected to Lex and Matt on her phone, for a very touching moment / phone call.

+1 Star for the event / phone call scenes....

-1 Star for having Crying Rachel Maddow in the show... even as herself... What an embarrassment.

+1 Star for the phone call where Matt and Alexis, both tell Emma that she needs to stay on mission.

+1 Star because Russian astronaut Misha is the best character in the show.....

And Commander Emma Green addresses the World, from the Moon, before launch.

+1 Star for Matt having the most memorable line of the Pilot. 'Go You f#$^#r, Go.'

Pretty good first episode, 8/10

It's a slow start.
Sleepin_Dragon7 September 2020
Go sees the astronauts of Atlas on their way to Mars, via a stop on The Moon.

This really wasn't what I was expecting, I thought we were in for a high action sci fi horror, but got what I would call an hour of melodrama.

If you are someone that likes intense character drama, relationships of the very emotional kind, then you will enjoy this, there is a lot of it, if you're looking for something with spills and thrills, avoid it.

The script is very cheesy, but there's no denying the talent of the cast, it's a very strong group of actors, Swank is terrific, but I'm not sure the part is up to her capabilities.

It does get a bit better as time goes on, verdict on episode one, if you're after action, abort mission immediately, 5/10.

Drivel for the soap fans
gareth-754425 September 2020
Interesting premise, really bad writing, cheesy soap drama drivel, each crew member has a history of OTT emotional turmoil, 2 years of a crew training together & none of them trust, like or respect each other yet they're chosen to spend 3 years together travelling to Mars, each character is completely unrealistic, absurd by any idiots standard, complete lack of any scientific detail. If this were a movie it would be on the sy-fy channel playing after midnight for the insomniacs, boring incredulous claptrap for the moronic viewer. Yes it's bile, yes the low scores are justified, it is boring & bland.

10 Episodes of Nothing
foxwingengel28 October 2020
I can definitely see why Netflix took this series off of life support. There's roughly 45 minutes of solid content across the 10 episodes. If you want to watch grown-ass people do nothing but cry 99% of the time, this series is for you. But if you're searching for a decent space adventure series, look elsewhere. This isn't even close.

Interesting but so unrealistic
christopher-m-collins11 October 2020
Production values are high. Acting is too notch.

All the simulations and plans for any future Mars mission involve strict psychological evaluations for all crew. This show presents a crew who is distrustworthy and unprofessional (and in once case, completely inexperienced). It's totally unrealistic that NASA or any international collaboration would allow these unstable people to risk a multi billion dollar mission.

I know it's all for drama but it's so unbelievable that I don't think I can stick with it after this first episode.

Melodramatic and boring.
cruise017 September 2020
2 out of 5 stars.

The season premier is boring. With barely anything happening. About a space crew getting ready to launch from the moon to mars. Except the crew has trouble trusting the captain played by Hilary Swank. After troubled news at home from her husband. She is conflicted on continuing mission or returning home. Boring characters. Boring plot. Dull direction. While nothing happens.

Writing Aborted
Rci-739-65893221 January 2022
Annoying to the extreme. Thick with drama and emotion, which is exactly how people are NOT. Good writers (and actors) know that emotion is hidden. Many space titles have gotten this exactly right, and should have served to inform the writers of Away.

This is what romance novelists might get if they tried to write sci-fi.

The people Away has selected to go on the first mission to Mars are precisely NOT like the people that would be sent... and suffers from the same character errors that Prometheus had... namely, sending losers on a massive, important mission.

Real astronauts are cool as cucumbers. On ice. Floating in a liquid nitrogen bath. Absolutely unflappable. John Glenn said of Neil Armstrong that he was chosen to command the first mission to the moon based on one criteria... that he was the most able to toss the weight of the world off his shoulders and do the job. That he had faced death so many times, and came out on top that he was literally used to it.

These kind of people are fascinating... but Away writers gave us drama you might expect from reruns of Dallas.

And the direction... incompetent. Shows like this need expert technical advisors on set at all times... to prevent ridiculous things like having the actors half floating around the room on the moon. It's a distraction that competes with the story as you find yourself asking "what the hell are they doing?"

Perhaps the creative talent, like the astronauts on Away, are all chosen by what color their skin is, instead of ability.

This show feels like it was put together by committee.
