Every day on a film set is a new adventure. Like if your romantic leads suddenly decide they hate each other. Or the set floods. Or the number of pages needing to be shot out in one day seemingly exceeds the number of known stars in the universe. Other times these adventures are much happier. A child actor reveals a hidden talent for drone photography. You work with a legendary actor. You get to watch the Berlin Philharmonic perform from Lydia Tarr’s proprietary vantage point. According to a wide-ranging cross-section of our Film Independent Fellows, all these moments, plus a whole lot more, constitute their “best day ever” on set.

“Why do people keep asking me that?” Cora (Megan Stalter) asks somewhere around the fifth time in Cora Bora that someone angrily demands to know what is wrong with her. Her answer, when she can be bothered to give one, is that nothing is. But it’s been clear from the opening moments of Cora Bora that that’s very far from the case.
Her fledgling music career seems to be going nowhere, despite the sweaty determination with which she lugs her broken guitar case from one dismally under-attended Los Angeles club to another. Her love life is no more promising: Her open long-distance relationship with Justine (Jojo T. Soap opera star Robyn Griggs, best known for her roles in “One Life to Live” and “Another World”, has died at 49 years old, according to a post on the actress’ Facebook page.
“With a heavy heart, I am saddened to announce Robyn’s passing,” the post began. “However, she is no longer suffering and would want us to remember that and the good memories.”
Going on to pay tribute to Griggs’ passion, the post continued, “I will never forget how open she was to telling her story, and accepting of me helping her tell it. She wanted to help people and spread the word of her story to do it. I was honored to do so.”
The soap star had previously been open about her diagnosis with cervical cancer in 2020, last month she shared that she had four new tumors. On August 11, Griggs’ father announced via Facebook that she was entering hospice care.

More than four decades into her career, Judith Light is taking on more projects than ever.
“A lot of people have said to me, ‘Oh, my God, you’re working more now than you did when you were younger,’” says the actress, who is receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Sept. 12. “I have immense gratitude for what’s happening.”
Light’s roles in the past year are as eclectic as they are numerous: an evil nurse in the Lifetime TV movie “Escaping the Madhouse: The Nellie Bly Story”; a pageant coach on Facebook Watch’s “Queen America”; and parts in feature films “Before You Know It” and “Ms. White Light.”
On Sept. 27, she’ll reprise her role as Shelly Pfefferman in the “Transparent” musical series finale. On that same day, Netflix will release Ryan Murphy’s first series for the platform, “The Politician,” in which Light also has a part.

The problem with “Before You Know It,” the debut feature from writer-director Hannah Pearl Utt (“Disengaged”), is that it overloads its 90-or-so minute running time with characters and subplots. Instead of focusing on the strength of some of her material here, Utt strikes out in far too many directions.
Utt herself plays a stage manager named Rachel, who is first seen walking down a Manhattan street with another woman; they talk rapidly about their lives, and Rachel offers some information about an actress mother who might have died that sounds too much like plot exposition. It turns out that this meeting between the women is something of a date, but the rather passive Rachel is too tied to her family responsibilities to go any further with it.

Diehard fans of the actress Judith Light — and there are many — will no doubt remember her trailblazing turn as Karen Wolek on “One Life to Live,” a role she played from 1977-1983. Originally presented as a two-dimensional gold-digging vixen, Light’s performance turned the character into a fan favorite. In a pivotal 1979 episode, the character reveals on the witness stand her secret life as a sex worker, an early sympathetic depiction of the profession that was largely free from negative stereotypes. Whether or not audiences remember the historic moment, Light’s turn as a fading soap opera star in Jen Tullock and Hannah Pearl Utt’s family comedy, “Before You Know It,” is sure to delight fans young and old.

We have officially entered the time of year when some of the best films from this year’s Sundance Film Festival begin their theatrical rollouts. And that includes the offbeat dramedy “Before You Know It.”
As seen in the new trailer, the festival standout from earlier this year features the fairly typical family dramedy tropes, but with a couple of additional quirks. Two sisters are trying to keep their lives together, while also dealing with a father that is quite possibly a man-child and the sudden re-emergence of their estranged mother, who happens to be a soap opera star.

Women directors, writers, editors and producers are making inroads, reaching historic highs in the world of independent films — while still lagging in reaching parity with men, a new study shows.
The latest Indie Women study, released Tuesday, found that women achieved record-setting levels as directors, writers, producers, executive producers and editors.
The study was conducted by Martha M. Lauzen, executive director of the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University. It surveyed women’s employment on domestically and independently produced feature-length films screening at more than 20 high-profile U.S. festivals including AFI Fest, SXSW Film Festival, and Tribeca Film Festival.
This year’s Sundance Film Festival had 45% of films directed by women, including Nisha Ginatra with “Late Night,” Hannah Pearl Utt with “Before You Know It,” Joanna Hogg with “The Souvenir” and Mirrah Foulkes with “Judy and Punch.”

After 37 years as the nation’s premier Lgbtq film festival, Outfest shows no signs of slowing down. The 2019 festival, scheduled to take place in Los Angeles from July 18-28, has just announced its full schedule. The lineup features a combination of festival favorites and rarely-seen foreign films, placing Lgbtq cinema in a truly global context.
The festival opens on July 18 with “Circus of Books,” the Tribeca hit about a daughter’s learning about her parents’ groundbreaking gay porn shop. It closes out with Sundance breakout “Before You Know It,” and will feature 28 world premieres during its run.
From features and documentaries to shorts and episodic content, this is truly an all-inclusive launching pad for Lgbtq filmmakers. The festival continues to push the boundaries of progress, with a majority of this year’s films directed by filmmakers from groups underrepresented in queer film.

John Cameron Mitchell, writer, director and star of 2001 rock musical “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” and this year’s Filmmaker on the Edge Award recipient at the Provincetown Intl. Film Festival, has never been a “genre-based person.”
“I like to mix,” says Mitchell, who also directed the films “Shortbus,” “Rabbit Hole” and “How to Talk to Girls at Parties.” He went the podcast route with his latest project, “Anthem: Homunculus” — a 10-part semiautobiographical musical featuring Glenn Close, Patti LuPone and Cynthia Erivo — after deeming it “too weird” and genre-crossing for Hollywood. “Life is not a genre then, either. It’s comedy and drama and music and mystery and fear and pain and love and laughter. So my pieces tend to be as varied as my life.”
With “Hedwig,” Mitchell fused rock ’n’ roll, Broadway, drag and performance art, and also pushed the gender fluidity of his German punk-rocker character. Mitchell...

After announcing its relaunch earlier this month, 1091, which was formally known as The Orchard Film Group, has made its first acquisition, snagging North American distribution rights to the Hannah Pearl Utt-directed Sundance film, Before You Know It. Utt, who made her directorial debut with this feature, also stars opposite Jen Tullock, Judith Light, Mandy Patinkin, Mike Colter, and Alec Baldwin. 1091 is aiming to release the film in theaters sometime during the second half of 2019.
Written by Utt and Tullock, the pic thrusts co-dependent, thirty-something sisters Rachel and Jackie Gurner into a literal soap opera after a long-kept family secret is revealed, taking them on a journey that proves that you really can come of age, at any age.
Mallory Schwartz, Josh Hetzler, and James Brown produced the project. Executive producers are Giri Tharan, Donna and Kevin Gruneich, Eric and Susan Fredston-Hermann, Mary Jane Skalski, Robin Bronk, Tim Daly, and Brian DeVine.

Within the first minute of “Before You Know It,” protagonist Rachel’s date jokingly accuses her of being a manic pixie dream girl. It’s not unwarranted – Rachel (played by the film’s director and co-writer Hannah Pearl Utt) is a be-turtlenecked, mousy stage manager who lives in an apartment-slash-independent theater with her eccentric family. Despite being the younger sibling, Rachel has taken on the mantle of matriarch after her mother died young.

This year’s Sundance Film Festival had no shortage of dealmaking, as Amazon spent over $41 million on some of the biggest crowdpleasers of the festival, while Netflix, A24, and Neon picked up a few notable titles as well. Nevertheless, Sundance’s 112 titles were filled with plenty of substantial offerings that have yet to score U.S. distribution. Here’s our usual plea to buyers to take a chance on these festival highlights, which deserve audiences well beyond Park City.

IndieWire’s First-Time Filmmakers Dinner at the Sundance Film Festival, presented by Rimowa, took place on January 28 and introduced a new crop of talent you can expect to see more of in the years to come. “We know that being a first-time filmmaker is something very personal to you, and you’re in the middle of this journey,” IndieWire’s Eric Kohn said at the event. “We get excited to tell the world about it, so we expect to hear more from you down the line. A case of quirkiness overload, “Before You Know It” is about two sisters — one sane, the other comically nutty — dealing with a radical shakeup in the family. That dynamic runs through the entire film, in which annoying characters behaving irrationally exasperate everyone else, sometimes including the viewer. This feature directorial debut for Hannah Pearl Utt, who co-stars with co-writer Jen Tullock, is a diverting yet awkward mix of farcical elements and earnest feeliness. The two never quite gel, and it’s hard to care about the nice characters who somewhat improbably put up with wildly insufferable ones. There’s some invention and good humor here, yet the whole feels inorganic.
