- A dramatic account of grief and self-realization, when 64-year old Gavin reveals to his grown-up daughter, Victoria, that he's been living a lie during his 35 years of marriage and now intends to be true to himself.
- Themes of identity, grief and acceptance are at the centre of this quietly revealing story about a 64-year old man, Gavin, who, after years of repressing the fact that's he's gay, makes the difficult decision to come out to his grown daughter, Victoria, a year after the loss of his wife of 35 years. When Victoria is forced to suddenly reconcile this news, she instantly begins to question everything she thought she knew about her father - and their close bond is inevitably tested.
We first meet Gavin and Victoria as they're walking home from the cemetery, after visiting his wife (her mother) on the one-year anniversary of her death. We can see that Gavin's noticeably nervous. There's something he has to get off his chest.
Victoria begins to sense that there's something her father's holding back. She guesses that he's met someone special. He admits that he has. She's very happy for him and wants to know all about this mystery girl. The more questions she asks, the more uncomfortable he gets. After some stalling, his truth is finally revealed. He is gay, and as the story unfolds from there, the characters exhibit all the stages of emotion as they tiptoe through the treacherous terrain of unexpected feelings. For Victoria, her father's secret sexuality seems to explain why her parents' marriage seemed to lack intimacy and openness, something that's influenced her own behaviour in failing to establish lasting relationships with men.
This is a moving and gentle story about learning that happiness is always possible if you're brave enough to keep your heart open. It also explores how parents' choices can impact their children, and influence their own behaviours, especially on the topics of love, trust and relationships.
