The second half of the British Emmys — the BAFTA TV Awards — are about to kick off. The first segment took place at the end of April when the BAFTA TV Craft Awards gave out gongs for below-the-line artists nominated for their work in this year’s best TV shows. Now, the main ceremony is taking place. This one is where all the big stars rock up as the acting categories are presented tonight in what is a live, televised ceremony broadcast from the Royal Festival Hall on London’s South Bank.
The stars are decorating the red carpet thickly and fastly while the sweat drips from the brows of our journalists just as thick and fast. It’s sweltering here in London. Props, then, must go to “The Hobbit” star Richard Armitage, who dons a pink velvet suit jacket. Velvet is a brave choice in such hot weather but he looks dashing as anything.

Netflix has dropped a teaser trailer for the comedy fantasy 8-episode series ‘Kaos’, a modern-day contemporary retelling of Greek mythology.
Zeus (Jeff Goldblum) has long enjoyed his status as King of The Gods. That is until he wakes up one morning and discovers a wrinkle on his forehead. Neurosis sets in, setting him off on a dangerous, paranoid path. Zeus becomes convinced his fall is coming – and starts to see signs of it everywhere.
Zeus’ once reliable brother, Hades, God of the Underworld, is secretly losing his grip on his dark dominion. There is a backlog of dead waiting to be processed and they are growing restless. Hera (Janet McTeer), Queen of the Gods, exercises dominion on Earth — and over Zeus — in her unique way. Charlie Covell might be known for the successful adaptation of the comic series The End of the F***ing World, but the British writer is currently working on a new show for Netflix, which is going to be released later this year. Kaos is an original work by Covell that is going to be a fantastic, mythology-inspired black comedy that will follow the adventures of Ancient Greek gods in a modern setting. Ahead of this year’s premiere – a release window has not been specified, as of the time of writing – Netflix has released the first trailer for the series as well.
Kaos is going to have eight episodes, as has been confirmed by the streaming service, and will see legendary actor Jeff Goldblum as the ruler of the Greek pantheon, Zeus; Goldblum replaced Hugh Grant, who was initially attached to the role. You can check out what Goldblum looks like...

Here’s an idea to hit you like a lightning bolt: what if Jeff Goldblum was a Greek god? Frankly, it’s a pitch that’s difficult to turn down – which maybe explains why Netflix didn’t. The streaming service has upcoming drama Kaos on its slate, bringing a contemporary take on Greek mythology – and casting none other than Jurassic Park’s Ian Malcolm as Zeus, the King Of The Gods. Yes, the Chaotician is now the leader of Kaos. The series comes from The End Of The F***ing World writer Charlie Covell, and there’s a stylish first teaser that you can watch right here:
From the very first instance of Goldblum saying “mortals” in his none-more-Goldblum voice (while checking his gold watch), it’s clear that there’s mileage in this premise. Not to mention, his Zeus likes to wear striped tracksuits and open-collar shirts, while living...

You know Zeus. Greek god of thunder, curly hair, luscious big beard, turns into a swan? You’ve seen his face on statues in parks and on tile mosaics behind the counter in kebab shops.
That’s not the Zeus in Netflix’s new fantasy drama Kaos, from Charlie Covell, screenwriter of The End of the F***ing World. As played by Jeff Goldblum, the Zeus of Kaos looks more Tony Soprano than beardy all-father. And home-of-the-gods Mount Olympus? Think a lavishly appointed mansion such as you might see on Selling Sunset instead of a bucolic paradise crawling with nymphs and fauns.
Covell’s vision of Greek myth clearly comes with a modern twist, hence Zeus’ Casio watch and leisure suit collection in the first teaser trailer below:
As Goldblum explained at a recent Netflix slate preview event: “One may say it’s about the Gods, but a different version of the Gods.

Netflix Emea boss Larry Tanz has criticized local quotas for “stifling creativity” and said the streamer remains “all in” while competitors “dial back.”
Speaking at Series Mania, Tanz addressed the ever-controversial conversation around quotas by calling for “greater flexibility” given how many shows Netflix is currently making around the world.
He cited the example of Spain, a nation that has obligations in place but with “flexibility” so that Netflix can make Spanish-originated films and series but then also film the likes of [big-budget UK production] Kaos in the nation.
“Our opinion is flexibility is a great way to encourage creativity and when we have constricting quota limitations it can stifle creativity,” he said. “The more flexibility we have, the more we can do.”
Recent research showed that Netflix had hit its 30% target in most countries on the continent but quotas remains a hot button topic.

Italian director Paolo Taviani, who with his late brother Vittorio formed the revered filmmaking duo that in 1977 won the Cannes Palme d’Or for “Padre Padrone,” has died at 92.
Taviani died on Thursday in a Rome clinic after suffering from a short illness, according to Italian media reports. “Paolo Taviani, a great maestro of Italian cinema, leaves us,” Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri said on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The Taviani brothers “directed unforgettable, profound, committed films that entered into the collective imagination and the history of cinema,” Gualtieri added.
Vittorio was the youngest of the Taviani Brothers, who emerged in the 1970s as the prolific pair whose works blended neo-realism with more modern storytelling in works such as “Padre Padrone” (1977), “The Night of the Shooting Stars” (1982) and Luigi Pirandello adaptation “Kaos” (1984).

In any given year, British TV can be relied on to provide plenty in the way of crime drama, and 2023 was no different. Between these returning series and newcomers A Town Called Malice, Blue Lights, Marlow, Payback, Rebus, Steeltown Murders, The Gold, The Sixth Commandment, Wolf and more, crime continued to flourish on the small screen.
Happily though, that was far from all that UK TV offered this year. There was fantasy too, in the form of Netflix’s South London super-powers drama Supacell, ghost detective series Lockwood & Co., Greek and Roman mythology series Kaos, and sci-fi in Prime Video’s The Rig.
Add to all those the romances, dramas inspired by real-life, and several other book adaptations, period and otherwise plus music-based dramas Champion and This Town, and it was a pretty full slate.

“Hollywood should be jealous of what Spain is doing and our facilities allow for this,” Netflix Spain and Portugal boss Diego Ávalos proclaimed today.
Ávalos talked up the stunt work and set design on shows such as Netflix smash Money Heist on a panel of the streamer’s execs at the Mia Market, explaining that sound stages have doubled to 10 since last year and there is a post-production facility with “state-of-the-art technology that is leveraged by Netflix around the world.”
“In Money Heist there is a big museum explosion and that was a set built entirely to last two minutes before it exploded,” he added. “We have built sets that I would argue are above anything you have seen in Hollywood.”
Other nations are also jumping aboard these facilities, he added, flagging the likes of UK series Kaos shooting in Spain.

“Fleabag” star Angus Imrie and “Am I Being Unreasonable?” actor Juliet Cowan have joined the cast of the provocatively-titled short film “Does Your Condom Make You Fat?”
Described as an “awkward” comedy-drama, the film explores a world in which men can become pregnant. The script is from Danielle Papamichael.
Imrie plays Owen, a happy-go-lucky lad, whose reliance on the Zap App for effective contraception is disrupted when his phone battery dies. This realization triggers his fears of an unwanted pregnancy, amplified by his date’s early unannounced departure. Throughout the film, Owen grapples with a rollercoaster of emotions as he confronts the unintended consequences of his actions.
Imrie’s other credits include “The Crown,” in which he played a young Prince Edward, as well as “Star Trek: Prodigy” and “The Archers.” Meanwhile, Cowan recently starred in “The Power,” “Flatshare” and “Everything I Know About Love.”

Arguably, no other established Spanish film and TV industry has grown faster over the last decade than its service sector for international shoots. Some of the world’s most favorable tax incentives have helped propel business to historic heights.
Kicking off in 2015, tax regs rose muscularly during mid-pandemic in 2020. But in December, the Spanish government took it up another notch, establishing tax advantages for international productions of up to €20 million ($22.2 million) per movie and $11.1 million for a TV series episode. That increase went into effect Jan. 1.
With a special tax regime, the Canary Islands’ ceiling is $40.0 million for a film and a $20 mil- lion per series episode, some of the highest in Europe.
Discounts for foreign productions on mainland Spain are set at 30% for the first $1.11 million of deductible expenses and 25% for the rest. The Canaries offer a succulent 50%-45%. From Jan. 1, deduction rates in Basque Country’s Bizkaia reach...

When former HBO executive Kary Antholis convinced veteran British producer Jane Featherstone to board a project about the Chernobyl disaster, the prospect of such an undertaking was far from a “slam dunk.”
“It had to be pushed over the line,” says Featherstone, “and that was with everybody supporting it.” But in the end, the historical drama from “The Last of Us” showrunner Craig Mazin was, as the producer puts it, a “lucky, lucky call” — and one that richly paid off.
The 2019 HBO and Sky miniseries about the 1986 nuclear catastrophe in Ukraine starring Jared Harris and Emily Watson won multiple Emmy and Golden Globe Awards, and put Featherstone’s new venture, Sister Pictures, on the map.
Few in Britain were surprised when, later that year, the production company expanded into a global studio simply titled Sister. Featherstone, who spent the previous 16 years with the Kudos production banner, partnered with Shine Group...

Kaos has been a long-time coming. Netflix first announced it had commissioned this British dark comedy reimagining Greek mythology back in 2018, but the pandemic meant that filming only started last year, and there’s already been one major cast replacement.
And even though we’re no closer to an official release date, the impressive cast list, unique premise and solid production team make Kaos well worthy of your attention.
‘Nothing Is Sacred’ in This Bold Take On Greek Myth
Set over eight one-hour episodes, Kaos is a contemporary reimagining of Greek Mythology exploring themes of gender politics, power, and life in the underworld. The official synopsis describes how six humans will discover they’re part of an ancient prophecy:
“Zeus has a wrinkle. He’s worried it might mean the end of the world and it might. Because on Earth, six humans unaware of their importance or their connection to...

Producers, showrunners, line producers and location managers all agree: When it comes to shooting a production in Spain, they need a bridge with local administrations.
As film and TV shoots ramp up to historic heights — doubling expenditure in 2021 vs. the average spend for 2016-19 — Spain’s intoxicating mix of historic cities, natural parks and intricate local regulations means that the role of the film commissions has become crucial in successfully carrying out production.
To date, there are 37 film commissions or offices across Spain, forming part of the Sfc Network. “Film commissions have come a long way in recent years and have understood what their role is,” says Meñakoz Films’ Fernando Victoria de Lecea, president of the Profilm line producers’ body, who fulfilled that role on Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City.”
“When a location manager doesn’t control a region too much, the film commissioner offers a large database. Then, he...

The eight-episode contemporary take, which was initially announced back in 2018, is described by Netflix as a “genre-bending series” that puts a “modern twist on Greek and Roman mythology, exploring themes of gender politics, power and life in the underworld.” Production is set to begin later this summer.

Exclusive: Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic World Dominion) has been tapped as one of the leads, vengeful god Zeus, in Netflix’s darkly comedic Greek mythology reimagining series Kaos, from creator-writer Charlie Covell. He replaces Hugh Grant, who originally had been cast in the role but had to pull out over date availability.
Goldblum joins Kaos‘ ensemble cast, which includes Janet McTeer, Cliff Curtis, David Thewlis, Killian Scott, Aurora Perrineau, Misia Butler, Leila Farzad, Nabhaan Rizwan, Rakie Ayola and Stanley Townsend. Filming is slated to begin later this summer.
Kaos is billed as a bold, darkly comic contemporary take on Greek mythology, exploring love, power and life in the underworld. Nothing is sacred in Covell’s bold reinvention of Greek myths (think tracksuits not togas), except the treachery and arrogance of a bunch of inconstant gods and their cosmic machinations…Some things never change.

Even actor Hugh Grant has weighed in on British politics, likening Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s resignation to famed slapstick comedy show “Benny Hill.”
The “Four Weddings and a Funeral” actor tweeted to activist Steve Bray, suggesting the “Benny Hill” theme song be played in front of Parliament. “Glad you have your speakers back,” Grant wrote. “Do you by any chance have the Benny Hill music to hand?”
Bray obliged and went on to blare the iconic “Benny Hill” track with loud speakers, drawing newscasters to the sound of the wacky them. Officially titled “Yakety Sax,” the song inspired local onlookers to also break out into a dance. “Benny Hill” aired on British TV from 1955 to 1989 starring sketch comedian Hill.
Grant previously played the role of British prime minister in “Love Actually.” The star has openly addressed the chaos of the U.K. Conservative Party amid multiple scandals under Johnson’s tenure.
