Paramount slashed its dividend 79% as it reported first-quarter earnings Thursday that showed strong growth in its Paramount+ streaming service but also continuing losses.
Wall Street reacted sharply. Shares of Paramount fell over 19% as the markets opened following the earnings announcement.
Paramount+ added 4.1 million subscribers during the first three months of 2023 for a total of 60 million globally, Paramount Global said in its first-quarter earnings report. Losses in the streaming business increased to $511 million in the quarter compared to $456 million a year ago, but fell from $575 million in the December quarter. Meanwhile, Paramount’s free, ad-supported streaming service Pluto TV hit 80 million monthly active users during the first quarter.
The increase in subscribers came as Paramount reported an overall $1.1 billion loss, adjusted earnings per share of 9 cents and revenue of $7.3 billion. Analysts were expecting earnings per share of 12 cents on revenue of $7.42 billion.

Above: Annette by Leos Carax. Design by Rysk Studio.Cannes is back, and so is my annual round-up of the posters for the films in the Palme d’Or competition. Ten years ago I went to Cannes for the first time and did a post-festival round-up of the Competition posters, leading off with Lars von Trier’s Melancholia. Back then I managed to find posters for 19 of the 20 films in Palme d’Or contention; this year so far only 15 of the 24 seem to have finished key art. The best of the 15 is a poster that I have already featured a number of times because it premiered almost a year and a half ago: Javi Aznaraz’s design for Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch, which was listed in the Official Selection of the cancelled 2020 festival and also made my Best of 2020 list. Of the rest, the poster by Rysk studio...

Exclusive: Khalil Everage (Cobra Kai) and Indiana Massara (Hero Mode) have joined the cast of The Crusades, an upcoming film from writer/director Leo Milano.
They’ll star opposite previously announced cast member Rudy Pankow (Outer Banks).
The highly stylized dramatic comedy follows three friends at an all-boys high school, as they try to survive one final weekend before merging with their rival school. It’s scripted by Milano, Jack Hussar and Shaun Early, who were inspired to write the pic, given their own experience attending an all-boys private high school.
As we told you first, Pankow will lead the cast as Leo Grecco, a charming and sometimes delusional dreamer who spends his life focused on things he can’t have.
Everage joins as unconventional jock, Sean. Despite having the game, the grades, and the girlfriend, Sean can’t seem to feel like “the man.”

Writing about “Friend” is quite intimidating. The movie has been discussed and written about a lot. What could I possibly bring to the table? What would be interesting for you, dear Reader? I’ll try to give a non-lengthy overview of why the 2001 movie is interesting to watch and add my two cents.
“Friend” follows the life of four friends growing up in the 1970s in the city of Busan, and becoming adults. They are from different backgrounds and have different trajectories. Joon-seok (Yu Oh-seong) is the son of a local mafia’s godfather, not overly excited about it, and very loyal to his friends. He is the glue that holds the group together. Dong-su (Jang Dong-gun) comes from an undertaker family and wholeheartedly rejects it. Jung-ho (Jung Woon-taek) is the comic relief of the band. Sang-taek (Seo Tae-hwa) comes from a middle-class family, is shy and hard-working in school.

Game on — the box office is once again competitive.
New Line and Warner Bros.’ The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It continued the moviegoing recovery over the weekend with a better-than-expected $24 million domestic debut from 3,102 theaters, enough to wrest the crown from A Quiet Place Part II and place No. 1.
The horror pic’s performance is all the more impressive considering it is also available at no extra charge to HBO Max customers. Unfortunately, studios don’t release streaming viewership data in such distances. (Releasing a movie straight to the home also results in piracy.)

Paul Walter Hauser is in talks to join “Cruella,” the live-action Cruella de Vil movie starring Emma Stone, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Hauser, who is up for the role of Roger, has booked the lead and title role for Warner Bros. “Richard Jewell,” based on the story of a security guard who was considered a suspect in the bombing that took place Atlanta’s Centennial Park during the 1996 Summer Olympics. According to an insider with knowledge of both projects, “Cruella” is eyeing a September start date that would enable Hauser to shoot both films back to back.
“I, Tonya” director Craig Gillespie is set to direct. Gillespie previously directed the films “Million Dollar Arm” and “The Finest Hours” for Disney. Tony McNamara wrote the most recent draft of the script. Marc Platt and Andrew Gunn are producing the film. Disney has slated “Cruella” to open on Dec.

When Kumail Nanjiani realized he wouldn’t be able to make it to his scheduled appearance on “Conan” last week, he tried to make up for the last-minute cancellation by enlisting “Silicon Valley” co-star Martin Starr to go in his place.
Unfortunately, Conan O’Brien had already moved on with an episode-long bit poking fun at Nanjiani bailing on him, which involved O’Brien’s longtime assistant, Sona Movsesian, and promoting “The Lion King” over Nanjiani’s new movie “Stuber.”
Nanjiani and O’Brien broke down the now-infamous cancellation on Monday’s episode of Conan’s podcast, “Conan Needs A Friend,” with Nanjiani revealing his “Silicon Valley” shooting schedule was to blame for his absence on the TBS late-night host’s show last Thursday.
